[solved] Slow program startup

Hello,

I have just installed vbox version 2 this week and I am very satisfied with the performance of the guest systems. But what surprises me is the really slow startup of the program itself!
When I start "VirtualBox.exe" it appears immediately as a task in the windows task manager with about 3 MB of memory usage. But then I have to wait about one minute (really!) until the process "VBoxSvc.exe" appears (also first with 3 MB usage) and then some seconds later the vbox window appears, so that I can start using the program ...

Anyone can confirm this or (better!) has an idea for "speeding up" the startup process?

Thank you very much,
Ruth

P.S.: I am using Vbox 2 on a Vista x64 system, which is installed on a FS laptop with intel dual core processor (2GHz) and 4 (i.e. 3,3) GB RAM, so I guess its NOT my systems fault

It is possible that your system is at fault. If it would be VB, there would be more posts about this issue. Do you have any security software running? What is the status of DEP (system properties or where ever MS hide that in Vista).

I'm going posting in this thread 'cause I've the same problem (Host: Vista 64. Guest: XP 32.). Maybe it takes even more time to start up! Initially it was very quick to start-up, the I've tried to change the icon of the shared folder in the host... Now that folder ("Shared") is unavailable ("impossible open \\VBOXSVR\Shared") in the host and it seems like it was a link, no problem in the guests. In past, I had the same problem without doing anything (nor traying to change any icon)... I solved reinstalling VM2. So, I'm thinking about reinstall it... But I don't remember: will I find my guest again or have I to save them?

I've just tried with the Vista's "ripristino di sistema" (in english it should be sometingh like "system recovery"). The shared folder is now again where it should be, but VM2 start-up is slow like before.

The question is: can I disinstall it and reinstall without loosing my guests?

The second start-up of VM2 (after a reboot) has been istant. Before every start-up was slow. I belive that the first one can be slow... It could be normal. Problem solved (I hope).

Thank you, sasquatch for your reply!

Actually the DEP has the default configuration, i.e. turned on "for essential windows programs and services" ...
Guess that VBox is NOT part of that, isn't it? :D

Beside that, MS Defender is running and also Sophos Virusscan.
I will try to check possible dependencies between VBox and this settings/programs (with the help of Sysinternal Tool "filemon", too) and post my results here. I think you are right, that this only occurs on my system, cause there are not a lot of responses - but actually, this also helps me!

Nice weekend,
Ruth

@Yanew:
I think, that you don't understand my issue:: I have NO problems with the speed or anything else related to my guest systems! The problem is the startup of the VirtualBox program itself!

I've the same problem. When VBox starts-up it's terribly slow... Up to 5 minutes. Then it wors fine.

@Yanew: Could you post your configuration (OS, RAM etc.)?

Update to my post:
I have tried some little (!) configuration changes at Sunday (didn't have much time on weekend: family stress  ), but with no success:
- I have disabled my on-access virus scanner (Sophos) and also the on-access scan of Windows Defender
- Just to be sure I have tried to start VBox as Administrator

=> No faster startup!

As you can see on the following part of a "Process Monitor" (procmon.exe) logfile. there is a 3 minute delay, which I don't understand:

Hi Ruth,

I have the same problem: very slow startup of the VirtualBox console, no problem to run VMs

I have Windows Vista Ultimate x64 as host OS
CPU Intel Core 2 Quard 2.4 GHz, RAM 4 GB
VirtualBox 2.0.2

I have no idea where the problem comes from..

Same exact problem here... VirtualBox takes upwards of 5 minutes (no kidding) just to start up, even if I wait until Vista is fully loaded (no hard drive activity for a while)...

I installed version 2.02 on a freshly loaded Windows Vista Ultimate (64 bit) machine... 4GB of RAM, Q9550 processor (thats a Core2 Quad 2.83 Ghz processor).... Intel dp35dp motherboard, 1333 Mhz FSB....

No good reason why it should take this long... But I do notice my hard drive light is it during the entire time it tries to start up...

I tried to DL the fix mentioned here:

http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/2212#comment:28

But windows is telling me that the zip file is corrupted, so I cannot get the files to extract so I cannot test this fix...

In a different topic, there was a mentioning ofthe corruption of the file if it wasn't on a specific location. You can try extracting it manually with a third party program like WinRAR and then run update.exe. A more clean way to do this, is see if you can run it from a different drive.

Ive tried with WinZip and Ive tried with windows OS native, both say the file is corrupted... Ive also tried changing where the file is when I open it...

Can you point me to the post that mentions the about the file corruption??
