Using Windows Remote Desktop Connection within XP guest

My situation is this. I work from home once a week. And I have a work issued XP sp2 laptop that I use for that purpose. I also have a linux laptop which is my primary personal machine. I have to use the windows laptop to work from home because the way I have to access our internal network from the outside world requires a Windows machine. I don't like having to get my work laptop out and put my primary laptop away when I work from home. I would like to be able to work from home through my primary linux machine. So I figured I would I would set up an XP 2 vm on my linux laptop (Fedora core 9) and connect to the office network through that VM. So using VirtualBox I created the XP 2 VM (quite easily I must say.) However, when I try to launch mstsc.exe (Windows Terminal Services client. "Remote Desktop Connection") to connect to a box at work it simply times out. I can connect to the internal network but if mstsc.exe will not work within a VM it does me no good. Sorry for the novella about this issue. Anyone have any advice?

Install rdesktop on your Host? Linux has RDP clients too.

For the issue itself, what Guest settings have you set? Network type, NIC type. Please see the Forum Posting Guide for help framing questions and what information we need to help you.

Thanks for the reply.

I am familiar with rdesktop but that won't help me in this particular situation. To connect to a machine at work I have to go to a website and click on link which launches RDP. So I would like to do it within the VM itself.

I am work right now and can't check the settings you mentioned. I will when I get home.

Can't you save that file, or change the setting in your browser to open it with rdesktop?

Well the portal through which I connect to my internal network is dependent on Active X controls therefore I have to open the portal using Internet Explorer hence I have to do it within the XP 2 guest itself therefore rdesktop is not an option in this case. Unless of course there is a Windows version of rdesktop which is an option I have not explored. However, the primary question is how to get Windows Terminal Services client to run with the XP guest system.

Have you tried configuring your network with the host adapter setting so it gets its own IP address or are you using NAT where it shares the hosts?

Using NAT

I'm using NAT. I have not tried what you suggest but I'll look into it.
