Error Importing an Appliance (ODI)

Post by marhamil »

Hi

I have Virtual Box installed on my work laptop with a working appliance on it for just Linux.
I am trying to import an appliance for Oracle Data Integrator but I keep getting an error message shown here:
Failed to import appliance C:\Users\marhamil\Downloads\VBoxApp-ODI12c\ODI 12c Getting Started VM - OTN 122131.ova.
Result Code: E_INVALIDARG (0x80070057)
Please can someone help?

Thanks,
Mark

From googling "E_INVALIDARG import site:forums.virtualbox.org" there seem to be some different causes for this error. You should do the web search too and try to narrow down what your circumstances are, so we have a direction to investigate.

You should be able to post links tomorrow, so please tell us where you got the OVA from.

Hi,
I got it from here.
https://www.oracle.com/middleware/techn ... loads.html
I have it working on one laptop but not on another. I think it is a registry setting mess-up that creates this error.

That's a 9.33 GB download... ¡Aye caramba! :o
I don't think I'm going to be trying to replicate your problem any time soon...

No, not really, the registry has most probably nothing to do with it, because VirtualBox is a cross-platform program, and there's no "registry" on Linux/OSX/Solaris.

I would compare the checksums (which I didn't actually see in the Download site that you linked) of the two OVAs (and their 5 parts) and see if they match. You may be looking at a corrupt download, especially if it's working on another computer...
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Hi Socratis, Scott,

I can retry downloading it over the weekend on my home Wi-fi which is faster than my work one at the moment.
I think i have downloaded this more than once as i suspected it may be corrupted some how and I got the same issue. I will retry.

Hi Scott, I am not sure what I am supposed to do with the hashes that you have displayed but I do want to check anything that you think I should do to get this working as I also would like to download and setup the Oracle VM for OBIEE box as well which is even bigger than the ODI 12c one but I don't want to waste my time downloading it if it is caused by some disk size issue that I am not aware of. Any further descriptions would be really helpful.

Thanks both for responding so far.

You can do a SHA256 hash on the files you downloaded and see if they are the same as what I posted. Of course if Oracle updates a file, then all the hashes will be useless.

Note that if this OVA is working on another computer, you may be able to just copy the already-imported-and-running guest to the computer you want to run it on. See Moving a VM and think of it as "Copying a VM".

Or copy the OVA files from one computer to the other instead of re-downloading them. Get hashes from the computer where the download worked and use them to confirm the copy to the removable media, then the copy to the destination computer.

In case you need help how to get the hashes, "7-zip" does SHA256 hashes, and so does "MD5Deep".

Hi Scott,

OK. I will give this a go over the weekend and see if I can get it working or learn something about it from those hashes.

There have been no posts on this forum from that user since September 2019, so I would be very surprised if you received a reply.
