Realplayer crashes vbox.

Post by tiny2004 »

I have Utunbu 8.04 as the host. XP as the guest. Realplayer 10.5 installed in the guest. It plays mp3 file fine, but when a rax file is played it will crash the entire virtualbox. I doesn't seem to matter if the rax file is on the host or the guest. Any ideas? The reason I have to use it in windows, is Realplayer protected rax files can't be played in Linux, as there are no codecs.

I don't know if it will work, but for Windows there is Real Alternative. It lets you play Real Media files without the crappy player. Perhaps it can also play your protected rax files.

Does the same also happen with a native install of Windows?

If this is a 100% repeatable error then its worth scanning for existing tickets and if not then opening a new ticket. (See FAQ — Need to file a bug report?) I just wonder if the CODEC is using one of the 3DNOW or SSE instruction sets and this isn't being handled properly by the VMM.

If you do raise a ticket then please describe exactly what version of Realplayer and what XP SP you are running. If the rax file is internet accessible then plesae provide the URL as well. also attach the VBox.log from your <machine>/Logs folder and the relevant section from /var/message/log where the crash occurred.

Obviously enough people, else the company would be bankrupt by now. Unless you have something meaningful to add, it's best to keep quiet. You won't start a flame that way.

actually i wasn't trolling, i recently had seen this same issue on a linux forum, one person was using realplayer (10 gold for linux) for no good reason and struggling with it.

real networks always just seemed like a strange company, behind the times, trying to lock you into them as your sole vendor, very keen on drm.... i don't know how they're still in business really.

their latest program allows you to backup a dvd that you can only use on one [windows] pc. how useful is that - and how bleeding edge, i mean dvd, not bluray or hddvd....

Realplayer crashes vbox.

All I want to do is to be able to play the RAX files I already have in Ubuntu, which is impossible, as those file require digital rights management, which is only available in Windows. Therefore I installed VirtualBox 2.0, and installed RealPlayer 10.5 in XP Pro. A RAX file will cause a crash of VirtualBox. Sometimes immediately, then others after a minute or so. I any event RealPlayer 10.5 or 11 don't get along with VirtualBox. I've already tried RealPlayer in Wine. It will install but won't run.

FYI, RealPlayer works fine in Windows 2000 or XP host computer.

Hmm, you use 2.0. Try 2.0.2. It's on the servers, just no announcement and link to the download yet. Nor is the repo updated. But it will be soon.
