If I'm interpreting correctly, there is an actual file in which the OP typed the password he needed in clear text, that he could rescue with an outside VM, then when the password is recalled (forehead palm!) then his actual XP VM can be logged into.

I would recommend you try Microsoft's ERD Commander, which contains lots of system repairing utilities, including password reset tool.

If you have a Windows XP install CD, it's also easy to change the password through a backdoor:

Or try Offline NT Password & Registry Editor or Kon-Boot.
