[Solved] Fail to install Windows 10 as guest

Post by Duanra »

Hi everyone,

I repeatedly fail to install Windows 10 on a Linux host. I don't get what's wrong. The installation process goes almost til the end, but when the screen "Getting ready" comes, the VM freezes. I should also mention that according to my infos the Windows 32-bits version shouldn't need hardware acceleration, but Virtualbox requires it anyway in order to run the VM. I enabled it the BIOS, so the problem got solved, but not the installation issue's still there. I enabled 2D and 3D acceleration to no avail.

Specs:
- Host : Linux version 4.15.0-54-generic (buildd@lgw01-amd64-014) - Xubuntu 18.04.1 64-bits
- Guest : Windows 10, May 19 update, 32-bits
- 4Go RAM for the host, 1024 Mo for the guest
- Virtualbox 5.2.18, installed via the Ubuntu repositories.

If anyone could help, it would be amazing ! I need that VM for work and right now I'm thinking about downgrading to Win 7 although that wouldn't be the best solution : /

Thanks,

You'll need to uninstall this and install from the official Virtualbox website. We are not aware of the changes made by the distro repositories.
That said, I don't see anything glaring in the log to say what might be the issue. VT-x is becoming more mandatory in later versions of Virtualbox, even with 32-bit guests. If the Virtualbox guest window is open and the guest OS is doing something guest-OS-y, then Virtualbox is working.
The iso is called "Win10_1903_V1_English_x32.iso", which appears from my search to be a direct match from a non-Microsoft site, Edit: I just ran through a tutorial on how to download the iso direct from MS and the name is the same. Be sure you have genuine media.

Hey scottgus1,

Thanks a lot for your help. Indeed uninstalling the Ubuntu version and installing the Oracle's one solved the problem.
The guest is installed.
