Close Virtual Machine Dialog Keeps Popping Up

Post by Karstaag »

Every time I start my virtual machine, a "Close Virtual Machine" dialog box pops up asking me if I want to "Save the machine state," "Send the shutdown signal," or "Power off the machine." If I close the dialog box, Windows continues to boot, but with only 4-bit color. If I switch to full screen, 32-bit color comes back. The color issue may be unrelated though. What I'm concerned about is the dialog box popping up because it's annoying. How can I stop it from popping up?

Windows XP SP3 is my guest OS on an Ubuntu Hardy 64-bit host. I'm using VirtualBox 2.0.0 with Guest Additions installed.

This should not happen. Do you hit the Host key and Q while it's booting by chance? Please provide some more information. See the Forum Posting Guide for what we need and help with framing questions.

No, I didn't hit any keys while it was booting. The problem went away, however, but if it starts happening again I'll post with more information.

New Virtual Machine, Happening Again

Post by Karstaag »

It's happening again with a new virtual machine I made using VirtualBox 2.0.2. I started the machine about ten times, and the box didn't pop up, but now it has again.

Here is all the information I have

Host OS: Ubuntu Hardy 64 bit
VirtualBox Version: 2.0.2
Guest OS: Windows XP Professional

Virtual Machine Configuration:
Base Memory: 1792 MB
Video Memory: 64 MB
- ACPI, IO APIC, VT-x/AMD-V enabled
- PAE/NX disabled
- 100 GB fixed-size virtual hard drive
- DVD drive mounted without passthrough
Shared Folders: 3
- all other options disabled/not mounted

Steps I took with the virtual machine:
1. Saved the state as "No OS."

2. Mounted a Windows XP SP2 install ISO image. Started the machine, installed Windows, shutdown, then saved the state as "Fresh Windows XP Install."

3. Mounted my host OS's optical drive without passthrough. Started the machine, then configured Windows (changed the wallpaper to a solid color, disabled the screensaver, disabled putting the monitor into standby after a period of time, enabled ClearType, disabled thumbnail caching, removed "My Documents" and "My Pictures" from the Start menu, and disabled Fast User Switching.) I then installed Guest Additions, shutdown, then saved the state as "Configured."

4. Started the machine, opened Windows Update and installed Service Pack 3, shutdown, then saved the state as "SP3."

5. Started the machine, opened Windows Update, then installed all critical updates. Restarted, then opened Windows Update again, and one by one installed optional updates (such as the .NET Framework version 1 and 2.) I installed one update at a time, restarting between each to avoid problems. After that I installed all the new critical updates, then shutdown and saved the state as "Updated."

6. I started the virtual machine, disabled Windows' Welcome screen, and ran "control userpasswords2" to disable the need to type in a password when I logged in. When I started the virtual machine after this, Windows gave me an error saying it couldn't log me in and left me with a login dialog. I typed in my password, correctly, and Windows said it was wrong. I couldn't get past that point, so I shutdown the virtual machine, reverted to my "Updated" state, and started the machine again. It started with no problems.

6. Added three shared folders to the machine. Started the machine. Used the Windows command prompt and the "net use x:\ vboxsvr..." command to add all three shared folders. I used the drive letters p, t, and x. I shutdown the machine and didn't save a state.

7. Started the machine, and about half a second after the Windows XP load screen, the dialog box in question pops up, asking me if I want to shutdown, restart, or save the machine state. I'm not pushing any keys while this happens.

To the best of my memory, that is absolutely everything I did, without leaving a single thing out.

I'm sure the problem will go away eventually, since it did before. It doesn't hinder any of the functionality of the program, but it is annoying.

I observed that same behavior on two installation of Virtualbox as well.
I appears to happen after upgraded to 2.0.x

Could this be a side effect? Should I file it as a bug?

Same here

Yup same here - I start windows XP Pro Guest - it goes through the first part where the gray line loads across the bottom - then goes through the windows loading xp logo - then when it switches to the higher resolution to display the login screen BAM! up pops the stupid dialog box - and it will NOT continue to load until after you click something..

Running Ubuntu 64 Hardy w/ latest Virtualbox 2.0.2 Latst Compiz-Fusion installed - not sure if I created this machine w/ 2.0.2 or earlier release ut tools are installed and latest- Guest is winxp pro SP3.

Thanks!

UPDATE - I went looking for an answer and not sure if it mattered but I removed the empty Snapshots directory in the VM's directory.. Next time I started up the VM the message box did not popup... Can't reproduce the same thing again and no message box is coming up now ..
