Hi everybody,
I installed Virtualbox 2.0 on Ubuntu and I successfully installed a virtual machine for Windows XP under Ubuntu. I tried to follow what is said to share folders between Ubuntu and XP, but it still not work, I don't understand why.
Here what I did :
- I activated samba and enabled sharing of my folder "Desktop" (for example)
- Under virtualbox, I added this folder in "Shared Folder"
- Then, I try to connect to a network drive under XP, and I enter the adress of the folder \\10.0.2.2\Desktop , but windows says he doens't find it... I also tried with \\srvbox\Desktop, but the same... When I go to the network, I can see "myname- server (Samba, Ubuntu)", but when I click on it it says I probably don't have the rights
What did I make wrong ?
Thanks !

Please see the
VirtualBox FAQ about Shared Folders. You need the Guest Additions.

I read it of course, and I think I made everything said, no ?
Q: How do I access Shared Folders?
A: You have to install the Guest Additions first. This is all described in the manual (and above for Linux), but as most users don't even read that, it will be pasted here.
In a Windows guest, starting with VirtualBox 1.5.0, shared folders are browse-able and are therefore visible in Windows Explorer. So, to attach the host’s shared folder to your Windows guest, open Windows Explorer and look for it under “My Networking Places” -> “Entire Network” -> “VirtualBox Shared Folders”. By right-clicking on a shared folder and selecting “Map network drive” from the menu that pops up, you can assign a drive letter to that shared folder.
Guest Additions are said to be paste here, so I think this is what I quoted, and I followed what is quoted, no ?

Check the manual and FAQ again. See the names? You misspelled it. If you want to access your Host using Samba, read more about it. You need a Samba user to access the share.

All right, I see what you mean, but I didn't find the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso file on Ubuntu to mount it on the windows guest as said in the manual (the directory /opt is empty... I just reinstalled ubuntu and virtualbox), neither in /home or anywhere else
PS : the manual is really good, but should be more visible (I know it is just below the downlod of the program, but you know...), and even be included in packages and archives, maybe people would read it more often in this case

Manual is supplied too. See Help > Contents

.
Use the Device menu to mount the GA ISO file. Then run what is listed in the FAQ and Manual.

Damn, it's a shame I didn't see it before

What I wanted to say is precisely that I didn't find this GA iso file when I try to mount it (Device --> CD/DVD Image --> Add --> "Choose an image file" --> I didn't find the file anywhere, in /opt, in /home, and so on... (in fact the /opt folder is empty). I made a search on all my drives, didn't find it

I don't understand how it is possible !

Dunno where you look, but as you also missed the help file it's obvious that you need to check your eyes

. If you look at the bottom option of the Device menu, you see the GA item

.

Does the folder sharing work for NTFS partitions ?When I try to share a folder from an NTFS partition, I browse the drive, I choose an NTFS folder, but the "OK" button is gray, whereas if I choose a folder from the /home partition (for example), I can click OK and share it with the guest.
Is that normal ?

I have an NTFS drive as a shared folder without any problems. Are you sure you have enough permission on the drive and that you entered the correct information (including folder name for the SF inside the guest)?
