[NotSupported] Copy/paste files through the Shared Clipboard does not work

Post by S3ss445 »

Hi Guys!

My Windows 10 VM does not allow me to copy files from the host to the VM (and vice versa).
In the options of the VM, the "common clipboard" and "drag`n`drop" are bidirectional. A swap between VM <-> host should be possible.
Next I activated the host I / O cache.
The guest extensions are also installed.
VirtualBox is on the latest version (6.0.8 r130520)

I noticed that this problem only occurs with Windows.
Linux (tested with Debian 9) works fine.

It could now be flat on the general problem "Microsoft" push ... :) Nevertheless, a solution would be quite good.

Many thanks in advance!
greetings

Please post a zipped log using the forum's Upload Attachment tab, so we can check on these "guest extensions".

BTW, just a little terminology, the Guest Additions go in the guest. The Extension Pack goes on the host. 'Guest extensions' is a combining of terms that would need clarification.

'Host I/O cache' is only for use by the disk access routines, not the transfer of files between host and guest.

Shared Clipboard is only for passing text on the clipboard, not for transferring files between host and guest.

Drag-n-drop can be used for transfer of files between host and guest, but it has been problematic at times. Maybe the log will tell us something.

Since you've apparently installed Guest Additions in the guest, you would also have access to Guest Additions Shared Folders, which are a common way to transfer files.

It would be beneficial to read up in the manual on each of these things to see what they are used for.

Google tells me that I can find the logs in the hidden ".VirtualBox" folder.
But I can not really make sure which protocol comes from the corresponding VM ...

As Attachment a screenshot of my .VirtualBox -folder.

Don't believe everything Google tells you! That directory contains some global log files that VirtualBox creates but not the one specific to the guest you are running. To find that, right click on the guest in VirtualBox Manager and select "Show log...". Take the VBox.log, zip it and attach it using the "Upload attachment" option.

That was the original problem (in theory). Which makes the title the wrong one...

Then you mixed "Shared Clipboard", you mixed "Drag'n'Drop', you mixed "Host I/O Cache" (which is the wrong title of the thread apparently), you talked about "guest extensions" (which do not exist). You need to get the problem right, otherwise the only thing that's going to come up is confusion. BTW, if you're trying to use Shared Folders, you haven't defined a Shared Folder in the VM settings.

So, can you describe what are you trying to do exactly and how are you doing it? Are you trying to use Shared Folders? Are you trying to use Drag'n'Drop? You definitely can't use Copy/Paste.

Also, if I only activate Shared Clipboard bidirectionally, I can not transfer data from my host to the VM.

Please answer the questions asked, don't throw more irrelevant entries into an already confusing thread.

I'm trying to copy a file from my host machine to a VM.
For this I activated the common clipboard and the host I/O cache in VirtualBox Manager.

Unfortunately, that does not work.

Correct, neither of these will help you get a file into the guest.

Looks like you have Guest Additions installed in the guest. You can use Guest Additions Shared Folders to transfer files between host and guest. Look at the Virtualbox Help manual, section 4.3

Is there no way to enable a simple file transfer using a shared clipboard?
Without shares to create / configure?
I even think that was possible.

Sure, but you'll have to program it. It's not in Virtualbox now.

Guest Additions Shared Folders does not require making an official "shared folder" in the host OS> Read the manual carefully.

No, not at all. Shared clipboard can only be used for simple-text file transfers. You can't copy/paste a file, or anything else for that matter.
scottgus1 wrote:I even think that was possible.
No, it's not. It never was.

Changing the thread's title from "Host cache does not work" to "Copy/paste files through the Shared Clipboard does not work".
