Unable to get sound on Vista host

Post by Entegy »

Hi all,

I've been trying to get sound in my guest machine with no luck. The Audio settings list the Null Audio Driver and Windows DirectSound as the only options for the host audio, but DirectSound no longer exists in Vista!

Nonetheless, I have tried it with the two sound card options (Soundblaster 16 and ICH AC97. Trying DirectSound + ICH AC97 returns a "Host audio not responding" error and DirectSound + Soundblaster 16 gets no error, but doesn't work anyway.

System stuff:
Host: Vista Ultimate SP1 32-bit
Guest: XP Pro SP3
Audio: Realtek ALC262
Using VirtualBox 2.0

Anyway to get sound in my guest machine?

A couple of people have reported this. I would suggest downgrading to 1.6.6 for the time being. Note that you need to edit out a couple of 2.0 Keys in each of your VMs.

This was a problem in 1.6.6 as well. I've been using VirtualBox since 1.6.2 and have never been able to get sound on my Vista host.

Others do have sound working. As we don't use Vista, it's hard to help you with this. All you can do is wait for someone who does run Vista and has sound working to tell you what to do. All I can advise you is to look at the Audio Control Panel and see if everything is set right. Did you also update your audio drivers and DirectX (10.1 is out already, might want to install that)? Is the VB application noted in the Volume Control and not on mute?

Well, every thing seems to be right in the Control Panel. I can't access the Realtek site to see if I have the latest drivers (but their site has always been crap), but my current ones are stamped March 2008 according to dxdiag.

I though DirectX 10.1 was something automatically installed in SP1. I'll go check MS' site later as dxdiag still just says "DirectX 10" but it's not like it matters since my graphics (Intel GMA 950) can't do DX10 anyway.

It's also interesting to note that VirtualBox is NOT listed in the Volume Mixer while it's running, which means I have no control over its volume settings. Odd.
