[Resolved in 6.1.16]Icons vanished on Ubuntu guest desktop in 6.06

I upgraded from VirtualBox 6.04 to 6.06, started up my Ubuntu VM, it looked fine. I updated the guest additions to 6.06, all my desktop icons vanished in the guest Ubuntu.

Host: Windows 10 64 bit build 1709
Guest: Ubuntu 10.10 (yes, extremely out of date)
VirtualBox 6.06 with 6.06 guest additions in guest.


I am not seeing any errors, and I can run everything from the menus, I just can no longer see or enable any desktop icons. I could not find anything obvious in the log file.

I removed the guest additions and the desktop icons were back, but, not really a viable way to run the VM.

I tried downgrading to 6.04 with the 6.04 guest additions, same issue.

I reinstalled 6.06, and installed the 4.3.12 guest additions instead, and that appears to have fixed the problem.

So, now running VirtualBox 6.06 with the 4.3.12 guest additions installed in Ubuntu 10.10 guest OS, and it appears to all be working. Probably less than ideal, but I'll take it.

Spoke too soon, VM freezes with the desktop displayed running with the 4.3 guest additions.

Guess for now it's no icons but otherwise functional VM.

Why would you go from trying the very latest to trying to pair it with something that was released on May 16th 2014? If the 6.0.x versions aren't working for you then try using 5.2.28 (the current 5.2 release as of typing) with matching extension pack (if you need it) and guest additions.

Also try checking that the guest isn't in Seamless mode. If you have the pop-up mini tool-bar look at the View Menu > Seamless mode.
Seamless mode makes all the guest desktop icons disappear and the guest desktop goes transparent see-through so the host OS desktop can be clicked on too.

I tried version 4.x because I happened to have it downloaded and handy (it was the only version that I could get to work properly on my old windows 7 machine), and it used to work fine in that version.

Behavior is identical with VirtualBox 5.2.28 with the 5.2.28 guest additions.

The guest is not in seamless mode.

It did work at one time on my Windows 10 machine, not quite sure which guest additions were installed at the time, but ever since I installed the 6.06 guest additions it has not worked properly. The only way I can get the icons to show up is to remove the guest additions from the guest OS. It no longer seems to matter which version of guest additions I have installed. I am also unable to install VirtualBox 4.x anymore, not sure why, but the install fails.

I can live without the icons, but it is annoying. Everything else appears to work.

You're having a hardening problem. Please read really carefully the following FAQ: Diagnosing VirtualBox Hardening Issues for some generic guidelines/ideas.

I would start by re-installing your Nvidia GPU drivers, they are either not signed properly, or their installer "forgets" to update the Windows Certificate Database, Nvidia are notorious for doing that.

Either that, or disable 3D acceleration, see how it goes...

Thanks, disable 3D acceleration fixed it. I'll take a look at reinstalling the drivers when I am not in the middle of testing.

Great! Let us know how the GPU drivers re-installation went, so that I can mark the thread as [Resolved]. I wouldn't want to do it now when the best solution is to disable the 3D functionality...

Been a while, still having the same issue, not seeing any hardening errors now. If I enable 3D acceleration, icons vanish in the guest OS, if I disable 3D acceleration, they appear.

At some point between 6.06 and 6.16 this issue appears to have been resolved. I can now enable 3D acceleration and the icons appear on my desktop. Sadly, I seem to have lost the ability to automatically resize the guest desktop.

You can mark this particular issue as resolved. Wish I could tell you what actually resolved it.
