VirtualBox 2.0.0 guest with more than 3.5GB of ram (3584mb)

Post by jasonlich »

I would like to test Windows Small Business Server 2008 in a vm and it requires 4GB of ram or more. Is there a way to allocate more than 3.5GB of ram to a vm? I have 8GB of ram in the host machine.

Currently this is not possible. Does the installer fail to run if it detects less than 4 GB of RAM? If so, then MS sucks even more than I thought :P. There really should be no problem if you use less than the mentioned 4 GB. They said you needed a 40 GB hard drive for Vista too and I managed to install it to a 10 GB partition. And there are several users here who have 2008 running just fine.

The installer will not even allow you to install it without 4GB of ram. Windows Server 2008 will install without 4GB of ram, but Windows Small Business Server 2008 will not install without 4GB of ram. If MS products didn't break as often as they do then I wouldn't have a job.

I'm doing the same, and it seems to be installing ok with the maximum allocated RAM. I'll post again if it completes properly.

bei mir gings mit den 3584 MB RAM. Hat mich gewundert, aber auch gefreut. Denn mit 2048 hats Setup am Ende gemeckert.

For all who don't speak the Language of software.developers: It works with 3584 GB RAM, at least on my 64-Bit Suse 11 with 8 GB RAM.

a bientot

Maybe you can find a tweak tool that will let you build an ISO without that check? Windows installers are usually somewhat customizable. I know you can use vLite and nLite to tweak a few things in Vista/XP's installers, plus you can have unattended installation files and such.
