Something weird is going on with your setup. Looking at the same two dialogs I see:

There are many more screen size options to select. What do you se if you click on the "Display Type" button?

I'm a bit puzzled as to why I only see "True Color" in the color modes listbox. AFAIK that always meant 24bpp, which would not be a good choice. Are there no 32bit color modes offered?

I get offered all of the screen resolutions at 256, 65536 and 16777216 colours along with the "True Color" option in the previous image.

Nope. Is the guest additions folder correct? See snapshot. I am not convinced the video driver is fully there.

Your guest additions folder looks correct. The drivers should get copied under c:\winnt\system32\drivers anyway.

Can you check what you see if you click on the "Display Type" button on the Display Properties dialog?

Also, if you look at Control Panel -> Devices and scroll down, are the two VBox... devices showing as started?

Which raises the thought... I'm not sure to what extent NT4 supported plug and play, dynamic loading of drivers etc. It would be good to reboot the guest from a full shutdown.

And... any chance these screenshots can be scaled down? They seem strangely magnified.

I have just created a nt4 server VM and exactly the same problem. No other software installed. Just service pack 6a and guest additions.
Shared folders and mouse integration etc works fine. Just the video.
Same errors.
Mighty strange.

First of all, before I forget it, it seems that you have a HiDPI setup, and that's your pictures are twice as big as normal. Next time, please downsize your attached images by 50% (at least), or simply change the DPI to 72. Not everyone has the luxury of a HiDPI display ;)

I have two WinNT4 guests; one is a "fresh" installation from the CD, the other is a Physical-to-Virtual one, my old computer. Both are working just fine. When I update the GAs, both are set to an 800x600 resolution and they're asking me to go through the Control Panel and verify the setup, which is 1280x1024x32 (True Color).

Comparing your logs with mine, I see the following differences in regards to video settings:
  • I have 2D/3D acceleration enabled in the VM Settings » Display » Screen pane.
  • I have 64 MB of VRAM allocated, you have 32 MB. In the same pane as above.
Change these two settings and see if it makes a difference...
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Sorry about the large screenshots. I regret getting a UHD notebook. So many things just do not scale at all (Steam is unusable for example).
I set the display as suggested and no diff.
