Windows NT4 WKS video no longer working

Post by salan »

Hi,
Using VB Version 6.0.2 r128162 (Qt5.9.5)
I fired up an NT4wks vm and now it complains about the video not correct. I have updated the guest additions.
I have even rebuilt the whole vm. (nothing special on it).
it is sp6a yet I although the guest additions installs with no errors, when you reboot, it goes back to saying wrong video.
Any ideas?

I need to see the whole error. Exactly!

Also, we need to see a complete VBox.log, from a complete VM run, where the problem occurs:
  • Start the VM from cold-boot (not from a paused or saved state) / Observe problem / Shutdown the VM (force close it if you have to).
  • With the VM completely shut down (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.

Well... not exactly:

Other than that, your log looks fine, so I definitely need you to 1) show me the complete error, 2) tell me how you got this VM up and running.

ok missing something that is the full log as requested. The vm is literally a new vm installed from an iso of a genuine cd.
SP6 added. then guest additions.
What is it you need ? The log is the one you asked.

Can you try a later version of VirtualBox? I have just fired up my Windows NT 4 guest using the Test Build 6.0.5 r129579 and have no such problems. The guest is pretty much a standard configuration based on the template. As it is a guest that was created pre VirtualBox 6.0.x it uses the VBoxVGA vGPU.

00:00:21.156873 VMMDev: Guest Additions information report: Version 6.0.2 r128162 '6.0.2'
Your guest additions appear not to have been updated as they are still reporting themselves as 6.0.2.

Can you shutdown the guest and go to the display settings in VirtualBox manager and change the vGPU from what I believe you have it set to (VBoxSVGA) to VBoxVGA (with no S). Restart the guest and see if the situation changes / improves.

Unfortunately I am at a bit of a loss as to what to try now as I can't get mine to fail. The only noticeable difference is I have 512MB RAM assigned to the guest rather than your 128MB but I can't see how that would affect it.

This error usually means that the selected video configuration is incompatible with the card. Unfortunately the error dialog covers up your exact settings on every ocurrence of the screenshot, so it's hard to guess what the problem might be. How about you click "List All Modes" to find out what NT4 thinks is compatible with the available graphics card?

The usual errors that provoke this error are: trying to select a higher refresh rate (meaningless in a VM hence not supported), selecting more bit depth in the guest than the host is configured for (unusual these days), or trying to force a widescreen aspect ration when the guest OS believes you have a portrait display (or vice versa).
