SketchUpPro 2019 Error:requires a graphics card that supports OpenGL 3.0 or better.

Post by eriox »

Guest Version:Windows 10 1809 x64
Sketchup Version: 2019 Pro
VirtualBox Version: 6.0.4 r128413(Qt 5.7.1)
Guest Additions: 6.0.4
I am running Linux on my home computers for security purposes. Sketchup will only run on Windows. I set up a Virtual Box to run a Windows 10 guest OS and have running Sketchup 2019 pro,However, I get this error:
"The following errors were found when launching SketchUp:

- Your "SVGA3D; build: RELEASE; " graphics card's OpenGL version is 2.1. SketchUp requires a graphics card that supports OpenGL 3.0 or better.

Unfortunately, these errors will prevent SketchUp from running. Updating your graphics card drivers might fix the problem.

See this Help Center article for more information."
How can I solve it?

You can't, because VirtualBox only supports OpenGL 2.1. Perhaps at some point later. You can still use older ScetchUp versions from what I've heard.

It would be similar to asking my old PC from 1999 to run ScetchUp 2019, not possible to solve... ;)

BTW, I've deleted your duplicate post from the "Suggestions" area. According to the forum rules, duplicate posts are not allowed.

I have a SketchUp Pro license, and I can tell you that Trimble make it very difficult to stick with older SketchUp versions. For one thing the ".skp" file format version stamp changes on every version, and older versions refuse to open newer .skp files - which most of the online resources soon become. It would be REALLY bad design if the format really required to be modified on every release, so I assume this is deliberate policy, to "encourage" you to renew the license every year.

Sad to say, but VirtualBox's support for OpenGL and Direct3D is poor, the level of support has AFAIR not changed at all in the 11 years I've been using it. Allegedly the new graphics chipsets introduced in v6 are the first step in improving the situation, I certainly hope so.
