HOST: Ubuntu 8 / Guest: XP SP3 - Insufficient Folder Access?
Hello,
I'll give you a big picture of what I am trying to accomplish.
Firstly, I dual-boot (Vista x64/Ubuntu HH). I am interested in learning Linux, but the only way I can realistically do that is to use it everyday (I don't have much "play-time". In order to do this, I need to be able to run the Office 2007 suite (required for school).
So, I am running virtualbox (in Ubuntu) to run XP, on which I installed Office 2007. I have a Shared Folder, which I set up w/VirtualBox. Subsequently, I went back into Vista and moved my "Documents" folder into the folder I specified as the Shared Folder in my Virtualbox XP install...this way, I can make changes to files whether I am in Ubuntu running XP on virtualbox, or if I'm in Vista.
I ran into a problem while setting up OneNote though. I tried to set my saved notebook, to the notebook that exists already in my Documents folder. It says that I do not have access and i need to contact an administrator.
I have fully shared all folders to my current Linux user.
I'm not sure if this is a linux host issue, an XP access issue, or a Vista folder ownership issue =\
Any help?

I've had a user recently that had about the same issue. When he was sharing his My Documents folder (and someone else used his Home Folder), he wasn't able to write to the shared folder. Using a subfolder or the root of the documents folder solved it. You can try that.

I should have indicated this earlier.
My Shared folder is:
D:\VMShare
My Documents folder is:
D:\VMShare\Documents
and my notebook folder for OneNote 2007 is:
D:\VmShare\Documents\My Notebooks\
So, if I understand correctly, I would need "VMShare" to be the 'shared folder'...or am I understanding it wrong?
P.S. Sasquatch, I just have to say that you're amazing. I frequent and help out at a few forums similar to this one, and never have I seen one man take on so many questions! Reps to you and thanks!

Thanks for the compliment. I'm working on this forum every day and it takes me about 1,5-2 hours to read and answer every topic with new replies since my last visit.
You are correct that you need to share the VMShare folder. Or the folder above it, the Root drive
. I hope it works.

You are having problems with shared folders right? So change that location.

Ok, awesome. So I have been able to read/write with Office programs!
I did make one change. Communications w/ Shared Folders was/is very slow so per this thread (http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. ... 6276#36276) I mapped the Shared Folder in XP to a drive and things are working.
I would verify that it solves the problem with OneNote, but now OneNote is crashing XP everytime I open it =S
I'll report the results once I get OneNote working, in case anyone has a similar problem.

Do you run 2.0 with the 2.0 additions? If so, SF is very unstable at this point. There is a fix on http://www.virtualbox.org/attachment/ticket/2055/ but I just tried it, still bogus. Use the additions of 1.6.6 for now, as that is the most stable version. See the Wiki page about old builds and announcement for the download location.

I have 1.5.6 installed right now.
I have been trying to upgrade to 1.6.6, but the .deb doesn't install. It asks for my password, so I assume it's installing as root, but it's not working, it doesn't give me any error messages it just fails.
Also, I can't find the upgrade in the Synaptic repositories (highly possible I'm doing something wrong, but I can only find 1.5.6 there as well as a bunch of other entries that don't indicate the version =\ ).
I would straight uninstall and reinstall the new, but I'm not familiar enough with Linux to back things up and get my .vdi back in place in working order (I've scoured the forums and it seems many have had problems there).

Ah, I see you ran the OSE version. Please uninstall that before installing the PUEL version. See the VirtualBox FAQ about that.

OK, I had one lingering OSE entry in my synaptics even after the purge. So I removed that and installed the PUEL version.
So far so good. Everything is running smoothly, and Office is running quite nicely, except that OneNote 2007 causes a BSOD almost immediately...I might have to uninstall Office and flush everything else of the computer and reintstall.
But alas, Mr. Bigfoot, you have stepped me through this quite nicely. Let's consider this one done for now =)
If I can't solve the OneNote 2007 problem, I may return.
Ciao.

Could you please try the updated driver from http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/2055
The download link is http://www.virtualbox.org/attachment/ti ... VBoxSF.sys
Size 191040 bytes, md5: 5cf7213badea6645c5fc162b337fcef2
Just put the file to Windows\system32\drivers in the guest and reboot the guest.
Thanks.
