Hello. I installed MS-DOS 6.22 on virtual machine. When I try to boot into Windows, I got loading screen, but after this screen I got a bunch of trash characters. Can please someone help me?

I'm sorry, but that doesn't make sense. You installed DOS and you try to boot into Windows? What does that even mean???

I installed MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows 1.0.

At first, I created a virtual machine with name MsDos6. I allocated 32 MB of RAM and 100 MB hard drive. Hard drive was in .VHD format.

Then, I installed MS-DOS 6.

After it, I installed Windows 1.01.

Then, I typed WIN in MS-DOS and get at first, normal Windows loading screen, but after, I got a bunch of trash characters (It's on screenshot).

Something is corrupted with the guest... I'm not sure how this is a VirtualBox problem to tell you the truth. Where on earth did you get Windows from? Can you verify the checksums?

I got Windows from this site: enderman ch/software/ (insert dot)

Can someone tell me where I can check checksums???

Windows 1.0 wasn't an OS, it was an installable GUI for DOS apps - and largely ignored at the time, so good luck finding any software for it!

So yes, first you install DOS, configure an extended memory manager, then you insert the Windows 1 disk and run the installer exe.

There is also a question of what graphics standard the software expects, and whether VirtualBox provides it. According to Wikipedia, Win 1.01 supported CGA, EGA and Hercules graphics. I frankly don't know if VirtualBox supports those old standards - they certainly won't be well tested.

Still questions: where can I get this extended memory manager?

What you are seeing is the effect of having no compatible (virtual) graphics card. So Windows 1.0 cannot display graphics in this environment.

Is there any way to fix it?

Provide the source code changes to emulate CGA, EGA or the Hercules graphics cards? Can't think of any other way...

Apparently no one around here has ever had the need or the desire to install Windows 1.0.

Maybe you can have some success when using DOSBox instead of VirtualBox:

DOSBox? I tried it. Windows 1.0 is working, but command prompt is very reduced: it lacks even help command. Only command I managed to get working is dir. So that's why I'm trying to get a normal Windows 1.0 machine.

Based on the Windows 1.0 and Windows 2.0 Wikipedia information then it wasn't until Windows 2.0 that VGA support was added. As has already been said, without that I think you will struggle with getting it to work in VirtualBox.

Other than nostalgia (which is mostly overrated) why do you want to install Windows 1.0? I can't see anything in it that would in anyway enhance my day / life!
