Performance problems with USB 3.0 controller

I have recently upgraded to virtualbox 6.0 (Arch Linux Host). I have Windows 7 and 10 guests. All of them have xHCI enabled.
I usually give the guests access to an FT232R based RS232 adapter. The guests detects the USB device just fine, installs the COM port driver, and it seems to work. But since the upgrade to 6.0, the performance seems to have degraded. The application sends some request via the COM port and expects a response within a certain time.
Since the upgrade, the application frequently reports timeout errors. This did not happen with 5.2.22.
If I disable USB 3.0, the guest has an OHCI and an EHCI USB controller. THe FT232R is actually attached to the OHCI controller, but things work again. No more timeout errors.
