Windows 10 installation quits unexpectedly
I have started an installation of Windows 10 on VirtualBox on my Mac. The process goes until you select a region and then crashes unexpectedly. Any idea of what I am doing wrong?

Yeah, you don't have enough memory on your host:Patryk1983 wrote:Any idea of what I am doing wrong?
You are assigning memory to your guest, that you do not have available. Either close some applications on the host, buy more RAM for the host, or reduce the amount of RAM assigned to the guest.00:00:14.752801 Host RAM: 8192MB (8.0GB) total, 1920MB available 00:00:14.900550 RamSize <integer> = 0x00000000bc600000 (3 160 408 064, 3 014 MB, 2.9 GB) 00:00:14.900827 VRamSize <integer> = 0x0000000008000000 (134 217 728, 128 MB)
May I suggest a couple of applications, so that you know what's available on your system at any given time? What I do, is to have several monitor tools running at all times. Your preference may vary, but you can use either of them (I use all of them concurrently):
- MenuMeters (for OSX > 10.10).
- X Resource Graph.
- Memory Monitor.
- HWSensors.
- Built-in Activity monitor.

Re: Windows 10 installation quits unexpectedly
Hi Socratis
Thanks for your quick reply. I was able to finish the installation but the problem remains when running the VirtualBox.
So does it mean, I should reduce the RAM assigned for Windows? I have reduced it to 2.5GB but the problems is still here. I guess I cannot reduce it too much because Windows 10 does require some memory, doesn't it? How much memory you suggest to assign?
I am not having any applications open apart from the Excel and Virtual Box. And within the VirtualBox I have only one program running.
Are you 100% sure this is the memory issue?
When I run the Activity Monitor right now with having only Safari opened I have already 3.5GB of memory in use (App memory 1.6, Wired Memory 1.5 and compressed 0.5). Is it normal?
Any advice is much appreciated.
Thanks
Patryk

Re: Windows 10 installation quits unexpectedly
I have my Win10-64bit at 3072 MB. The minimum is 2048 MB according to MS. You have 2 460 MB (2.4 GB) assigned to your VM, it should be more than fine. Look at the Task Manager inside the host (Ctrl+Shift+Esc » Performance). In mine, it starts at 1.4 GB (47%) of the RAM. So, you are left with 1 GB free RAM on the guest, that should be more than fine.Patryk1983 wrote:How much memory you suggest to assign?
The main problem is that you only have 8192 MB on your host. You have the MBAir, either the Mar/2015 or the Jun/2017 one (can't tell them apart both have DMI Product Name: MacBookAir7,2). The max amount of RAM that you can install on either is 8 GB and you're maxed out. But, from the 2nd log, it seems that you have more than enough available memory on your host:
That should be more than fine...00:00:02.026708 Host RAM: 8192MB (8.0GB) total, 4392MB (4.2GB) available

What problem? I thought you said that the installation is done. That's the only problem you reported; that it crashes during installation...Patryk1983 wrote:I have reduced it to 2.5GB but the problems is still here.
PS. I should have mentioned it, but you should completely shut down the VM before grabbing the VBox.log.

Re: Windows 10 installation quits unexpectedly
thanks again for a quick reply. Yes, the installation went successfully but the VM still shuts down after few minutes literally. The last log I have sent was after such unexpected shut down.
Really, I don't know what to do. I haven't thought 8GB of RAM is not enough for a basic tasks. At the end, I have only my browser opened and the VM.
And within the VM I have installed a program called ContaSol (accounting) as it is not supported on MAC. This is the only reason I have installed VM to use that accounting programme.
Ps. yes, I have MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017)
Please advice what should I do? Maybe some of my settings aren't right? Or maybe something with the Video display causing it to shut down. Don't know ...

Re: Windows 10 installation quits unexpectedly
Were you running this program when the VM shut down? Or were you doing something else when the VM crashed?Patryk1983 wrote:I have installed a program called ContaSol (accounting)
Running a highly demanding OS, inside a highly demanding OS, that's not a "basic task". But, as I told you, the way you have it currently set, you have plenty of free RAM both in your host and in your guest.Patryk1983 wrote:I haven't thought 8GB of RAM is not enough for a basic tasks
BTW, I just noticed in your 2nd log that you booted (again) from the installation DVD. Did you remove it after you installed the guest? If you leave it there, it's going to prompt you where to boot from, but it's best if you completely remove the DVD after the installation. Like in a real computer...00:00:06.957147 VMMDev: Guest Log: BIOS: Booting from CD-ROM... 00:00:11.498450 Display::handleDisplayResize: uScreenId=0 pvVRAM=000000010fd5d000 w=1024 h=768 bpp=24 cbLine=0xC00 flags=0x0
Since you brought it up, enable 2D and 3D acceleration in the VM Settings » Display:Patryk1983 wrote:Or maybe something with the Video display causing it to shut down.
Other than that, there's nothing (obviously) wrong with your VM...00:00:02.204167 3DEnabled <integer> = 0x0000000000000000 (0) 00:00:04.945806 GUI: 2D video acceleration is disabled
