Sound Problems VirtualBox 6

I'm encountering sound problems after updating to VirtualBox 6 with extensions pack installed. There is a constant cracking noise on all my guest operating systems.
Anyone with a similar problem?

Nothing methodically done, but in some of my VMs I've noticed that too. Didn't have enough time to compile a list of what's working and what's become problematic...

I have crackling sound in my guest similar to descriptions I've read on the forums for other hosts. I hear it in multiple sound contexts: playing a video in Firefox, playing an MP3, and the sound testing buttons in the audio settings panel.
My host: Mac OS X, High Sierra, 10.13.6
Guest: Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (Bionic Beaver)

Which sound card emulation do you use? I can confirm that I also hear the crackling with AC97, but not with Intel HD Audio.
