ModEdit; related ticket: #18188: WINDOWS 10/HP UPDATED CAN NOT OPEN VIRTUAL BOX
After windows 10/HP update VirtualBox would not open. I tried the VirtualBox 6.0 test build but file run had errors. I tried updating VirtualBox 5.2.23 exe, ext and guest additions. I attached a screen shot of the virtual box opening screen. I do not have a log file available.
Really appreciate any help. Thanks, Danny.

If you cannot delete a file from virtual media manager it usually indicates that it is in use by a running vm.
I doubt that trying a different version of VirtualBox will have any effect. Are your vms shut down or in a saved state?

Do you see that "Remove" button in the toolbar? Click on that to remove the "VBoxGuestAdditions.iso" (when it's selected). Then do the same for the "VBoxGuestAdditions_5.0.9-103895.iso".
The idea is to use the "Release" button if it's mounted in the VM (what I told you to do in the ticket), and then press the "Remove" button to remove it from the list of the Optical Media.
And as I also told you in the ticket, "This happened because you updated VirtualBox with the GAs CD still mounted in the VM. You need to get into the habit of removing the GAs CD after you're done with the installation."
And since I see a "VBoxGuestAdditions_5.0.9-103895.iso" in there, please do *not* download the Guest Additions (GAs) CD separately from the main VirtualBox program. The GAs CD comes bundled with the main program, in order to use it you go to the menu "Devices" » "Insert Guest Additions CD Image...".
PS. I merged your two topics. According to the forum rules,
duplicate posts are not allowed. It's not good etiquette...

OK, to address your recommendations;
First, I can not open the Virtual application past the screen shot I provided.
The VM gives this error when I try to open it.
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine .
The object functionality is limited.
Result Code: E_ACCESSDENIED (0x80070005)
Component: MachineWrap
Interface: IMachine {85cd948e-a71f-4289-281e-0ca7ad48cd89}
I only have one VM; Windows 10 is the host and Windows XP is the VM.
Please let me know if there is a way to check for any other VM's on my system.
I have tried the "Remove" button several times and the ISO's continue to be listed.
The "Remove" button does not remove the ISO's.
The "Release" button is not highlighted when selecting an ISO and can not be released.
I have been updating for several years and have not had a problem.
I run the exe update, then the ext update, then I let the VM bring in the GAs.
Has always worked fine.
I do not know where the "VBoxGuestAdditions_5.0.9-103895.iso" came from.
I have provided screen shot of the exe program.
How do I fix the problem with not being able to remove the ISO's from the Virtual media manager's optical disk?
Those ISO's do not exist in any of my computer file listings.
Your help getting past this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Danny.

Hmm... something's rotten in Denmark™...
I think I know what it might be (hint: MediaRegistry), so I would like to see the "recipe" of the VM, the ".vbox" file:
- Right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager. Select "Show in Explorer".
- ZIP the selected ".vbox" file and attach it to your response.
PS. How comfortable are you editing XML files? Do you know what "Notepad++" is (without Googling it)?

The VM, Windows XP, is inaccessible.
When I right click on it the only options highlighted is "Remove", "Refresh" and "Sort".
"Show in Explorer" is not highlighted and I can not act on it.
I did a computer search for .vbox and found this text file; VBoxSVC.log, I attached the file.
Do not know if this will help.
Let me know if I need to search for a more specific file.
Thanks, Danny.

Wow! Impressive...
Danny O wrote:VBoxSVC.log, I attached the file. Do not know if this will help.
It actually did. Here's what I found out...
VirtualBox COM Server 5.2.23 r127495 win.amd64 (Dec 14 2018 09:40:10) release log
VirtualBox 6.0.0 came out yesterday, you might want to upgrade. It is
not going to solve your current problem.
00:00:00.530420 Loading settings file "C:\Users\BUBBA\VirtualBox VMs\WINDOWS XP\WINDOWS XP.vbox" with version "1.15-windows"
This is the file I'm looking for...
PS. Remember to ZIP your logs (and the .vbox file). It helps save a (virtual) tree or two...

I attached the files I could find.
Let me know if you need other specific files.
I have tried updating to ver 6 and I get errors.
This time I ran the ver 6 upgrade with the "Start VM" unchecked.
The ver 6 install was good.
I ran the ver 6 ext file upgrade and got the VM virtualbox mgr.
I attached screen shots; one after the ver 6 exe install, one after the ver 6 ext insall and one after the VM virtualbox screen came up.
Virtualbox mgr is still showing the "VBoxGuestAdditions_5.0.9-103895.iso" file in the Optical Disk tab.
This file does not exist on my machine.
Would it work if I had a copy of this file to reinstall so the machine could source then the "Release" button might work???
Thanks, Danny.

I see. Just as I suspected... Remember when I said?

socratis wrote:How comfortable are you editing XML files? Do you know what "Notepad++" is (without Googling it)?
You never answered, so please answer the question above, now.
You've been bitten by the extra references in the Media Registry part. I've open a ticket for this,
#17908: Optional entries in the <MediaRegistry> section may prevent VM registration. In your case they prevent even the launch of the VM!
Here's what your .vbox looks like, in the area of interest:
<DVDImages>
<Image uuid="{f46b9056-6d23-43e1-9b09-cd1e31cd112f}" location="C:/Program Files/Oracle/VirtualBox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso"/>
<Image uuid="{7318d578-a7bf-4df5-aaac-2827be285a3f}" location="C:/Users/BUBBA/Downloads/VBoxGuestAdditions_5.0.9-103895.iso"/>
</DVDImages>
The "VBoxGuestAdditions.iso" most probably has the wrong UUID because you updated VirtualBox, and you've most probably deleted the "VBoxGuestAdditions_5.0.9-103895.iso" from your hard disk...
The
"how comfortable are you" above is to figure out if you can delete these four lines. Shutdown VirtualBox (or even better reboot your computer and do *not* run VirtualBox), and open "
C:\Users\BUBBA\VirtualBox VMs\WINDOWS XP\WINDOWS XP.vbox" with
Notepad++. Delete lines 14 through 17, save the file, start VirtualBox and your VM.

I can open the file, "C:\Users\BUBBA\VirtualBox VMs\WINDOWS XP\WINDOWS XP.vbox", in Notepad OK.
Just not sure what to delete.
There is also a previous file in the system; "C:\Users\BUBBA\VirtualBox VMs\WINDOWS XP\WINDOWS XP.vbox-prev"
I attached the "C:\Users\BUBBA\VirtualBox VMs\WINDOWS XP\WINDOWS XP.vbox" file.
Thought you might be able to make the necessary changes and send it back to me.
Or, copy and paste exactly what I need to delete.
Thanks, Danny.

Can I copy the existing "WINDOWS XP.vdi" in the Windows XP VM, that we are having problems with, to a "NEW VM"?
I can extract the "WINDOWS XP.vdi" if necessary.
Thanks, Danny.

Looking at the "Windows XP.vdi" file there are Restore Volumes listed.
Could these be used to fix the XP VM?
I attached the screen shot of the "Windows XP.vdi" file.

I downloaded the notepad program and deleted lines 14-17
Now the Windows XP VM is assessable but there is a start error.
Running ver 6 and ver 6 ext.
Have not run guest additions; the VM will not load.
I attached the screen shot of the error and the log file.
Thanks, Danny.
