Shared folders not working on Windows 10 guest...UGH!

Long story short...had to use Windows 10 for testing of a hybrid dev project...installed Win 10 and can't get the Shared folder to show up. Latest version of VBox (5.2.22 r126460 (Qt5.6.3)) and latest Guest Additions (today)...so, I tried mounting and reinstall Guest Additions thinking maybe the culprit, but get this (attachment). Also, running El Capitan 10.11.6 (Early 2009 Mac Pro).

If you search for the error message contained within the dialog box then it seems to be related to the UAC in Windows being borked.

If you narrow the search down and only look for things related to VirtualBox then the suggestions all seem to be to disable 3D acceleration and then the guest additions will install.

I have no idea why that would be the case.

Because... it's not? ;)

AFAIK, there is no connection with the 3D acceleration and the UAC not working.

Okay...I just reinstalled the Extension Pack (5.2.22) and when I check the version in the task bar it still shows the older version (5.1.28) running...?? Am I missing something?

You've got to be careful with the terminology. There are two distinct things:
  • The Extension Pack (ExtPack) gets installed on the host and it has to match the VirtualBox version. It provides functionality such as USB2-3, Webcam, VRDP, PXE, PCI passthrough on Linux hosts, VDI Encryption. You have to download it and install it separately from the main VirtualBox program, due to its license.
  • The Guest Additions (GAs) get installed on the guest and it would be good to match the VirtualBox version, for anything other than enhanced graphics support. It provides functionality such as shared folders, shared clipboard, drag and drop, pointer sharing (for PS/2 mice), enhanced graphics support. You do not have to download it separately from the main VirtualBox program, since it comes bundled with it.
So, which did you re-install? In order to install/update the GAs, with the VM window having the focus go to the menu "Devices" » "Insert GAs CD Image..." and then follow the prompts.

Sorry for confusing the 2. I did the
"Devices" » "Insert GAs CD Image..." and then follow the prompts
and get this:

Selecting YES, of course...then get:

There are several references to VirtualBox graphics in the very long thread File System error (-1073741819) on Windows 10 amongst a myriad of other things too.

Still can't see the connection no matter how hard I try...
Maybe disabling the 3D acceleration jolts something in the system? Can't tell for sure...
