Drag and Drop not working between guest (Windows 10) and host (Mojave)

Post by Angusvicki »

Hi Team,
I am using VirtualBox version 5.2.20-125813-OSX on my MacBook with Mojave with the guest Windows 10. But the drag and drop, cut and paste are not working after trying a lot of solutions from Google. Anyone knows it will work with the latest version 5.2.22-126460-OSX? Or any solution for the version 5.2.20-125813-OSX? Please advise.

Many Thanks

In order for these features to work you need the Guest Additions to be installed in the Guest. Not all OSes have them available, so I can't give you specific advice since you didn't tell me what the Guest is.

How about going to the Help » Contents? There's a nice PDF manual, that's actually searchable! In there, you'll find Ch. 4.2 Guest Additions. The instructions are all there...

Hi Socratis,

Thanks for your reply but I have installed the guest additions already and as the subject line said the guest is Windows 10!

I never look at the subject line! :D
(I'm joking of course, I simply got distracted and forgot it)

I need to see a complete VBox.log, from a complete VM run:
  • Start the VM from cold-boot (not from a paused or saved state) / Observe error / Shutdown the VM (force close it if you have to).
  • With the VM completely shut down (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.

Hi Socratis,

Please see the second attached log which was created with the version 5.2.22 after guest additions installed and enabling VB into Mojave's accessibility -> system preferences -> Security and Privacy -> Privacy tab. Then, system preferences -> accessibility -> Mouse & Trackpad -> Trackpad option -> Enable dragging with Three Finger Drag.
But it only works one time from Guest to Host and then it will not work with untitled clipping shown onto the host desktop.
Please see the log and the screenshot as well.

Many Thanks

Angus

Why oh why would I want to do that? Please give me a good reason why I should spend my time to look into something that I know it's not going to work.

Excuse me, but what does this have to do with Drag'n'Drop to the guest?

Finally, I thought that the instructions were pretty clear; start, observe the problem, shutdown. You resumed, inserted CDs, you upgraded, and the log is unnecessarily long, which makes my life more difficult...

But, in any event, the Guest Additions seem to be installed, but you're getting this:
00:03:08.350906 DnD: Unsupported MIME type 'text/plain'
I honestly don't know what that means. I never realized that the MIME type was going to be involved with the DnD functionality. What are you trying to transfer?

Shut down the VM and restart it. You may jolt something in the system, who knows...
