Host-Only network: Cannot Ping between two guest

Post by BigWookieDad »

Greetings all,

I have search the forms, read the manual ch 6, and tried troubleshooting my issue, but as it seems I still have not been able to ping between two boxes. I discovered this after trying to join a VM to a domain. I am trying to setup a training test domain in which I just need the network between the two windows domain controllers to work :)

I cannot post images yet or I would.

Well, I'm not sure where the below server is getting the 169.254.131.4 address? From?
Ethernet adapter Ethernet:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
   Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Desktop Adapter
   Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 08-00-27-7A-DB-40
   DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
   Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
   Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.131.4(Preferred)
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.56.100(Duplicate)
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.56.1
   DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.56.100
   NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled
But, here is the other server which I think look more than normal?
Ethernet adapter Ethernet:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
   Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Desktop Adapter
   Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 08-00-27-B1-6D-1A
   DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
   Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.56.10(Preferred)
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.56.1
   DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.56.100
   NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled
What am I missing? Or do you know why the ip address 169 is showing in server 1?

Okay, goober here, I think I figured out the issue. It just took talking about it here lol.

The ipaddress 192.168.56.100 was some how already in use... not sure how... but whatever. I can not ping between the two guest.

1) Yes you can attach images here, 2) No need to, text is much preferred when possible. It's smaller, searchable and quotable... ;)

Search for "APIPA". Or search for "169.254 address", same thing. Search engines can sometimes be your best/fastest friend...

Have you checked your guests' firewall? A lot of times[1] ICMP traffic may not be allowed, which would prevent 'ping' from working.

[1]: Depending on the guest, you didn't mention what it is; a "box" is not a complete/correct version for any operating system that I know of...
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
