USB disconnect sound constantly plays while running VirtualBox

Post by psychonaut25 »

I apologize if this issue has been addressed before, I tried searching for it but could not find it.

I am running the latest version of VirtualBox on Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. This problem occurred in the previous version I had installed as well, but persists even after I updated to the most recent version about an hour ago.

Whenever VirtualBox is running, the Windows host consistently, every few seconds, makes the USB disconnect sound. It just keeps doing this repeatedly over and over. This is true regardless of whether or not there is a virtual machine running.

Is this a problem with the USB drivers? Can anybody point me towards a solution? I am willing to provide any more details needed (logs, etc.) as long as you can give me instructions on how to acquire the data. It's more of an annoyance than anything else, but I'd imagine it's not supposed to be happening, given ideal circumstances.

Thanks

For which device? Open Device Manager and take a look at what's going on, it should automatically refresh. There's no reason why a USB host device would be affected if no VMs are running...

Yeah, the device manager does auto refresh (every single time the sound is played, about once every two seconds) but the only thing I see with a yellow exclamation mark is an old VPN network interface that I never use anymore. Could that be the culprit? Seems odd to be making that sound since it's not USB, but I really don't know.

I disabled the network interface, but the problem persists.

Try to uninstall/remove/delete it, not simply disable the network interface.

As for the USB issue (are you sure it's USB?) try USBDeview, or USBView. See if these can help you any further...

Seems as though I've isolated the issue down to a USB MIDI controller that I sometimes use for FL Studio, but which I have a tendency of just leaving plugged in. After I unplugged it, the issue disappeared. So from now on if I'm using VirtualBox I will just unplug the MIDI controller.

Thanks for the troubleshooting help, socratis

Could you keep your MIDI and start VirtualBox Manager? Then quit it, wait for a minute or two, and look in "C:\Users\<you>\.VirtualBox\VBoxSVC.log". ZIP it and post it if you can...

Thanks... You have every couple or so seconds, the following:
00:00:36.439084 USBPROXY Getting USB descriptor failed with error 31
No clue why it connects/disconnects the MIDI from the USB tree though, that's I guess something for a more in depth analysis...

Oh well. At least now I know which device is causing it, and I can remove it as needed. Thanks again

Hello,

I'm posting for the first time on the forums where I usually find an answer, but here I can't find any when with my favorite search engine ; also I allow myself to reply here even though it has been 2 years since the last answer, because it seems this issue has not been resolved yet and is exactly the one I encounter, except the error is slightly different :
00:00:00.218040 Getting USB descriptor (id 3) failed (dwErr=995) on hub USB#ROOT_HUB30#5&134681bb&0&0#{f18a0e88-c30c-11d0-8815-00a0c906bed8} port 2
00:00:00.234943 usbLibGetDevices: Found 5 USB devices, 0 captured
These 2 lines are repeating indefinitely in the VBoxSVC.log while the device is plugged in ; it's instantly stopping when I unplug it.
I have identified the affected device, a midi keyboard (Eagletone Tiny Key 25), and the issue is happening when I launch VirtualBox UI (not even a VM) ; I've already tried many things without a single change on the symptoms :
  • Rebooting host
  • Disabling power supply rule in device management (on the host) for this device
  • Disabling USB controller on the VM I use
  • Updating VirtualBox software and extension pack (6.1.18)
  • Checking drivers of the controller (it's a plug-and-play device)
  • Checking and disabling Devices in USBDeview ; I have identified something though throught this : the device seems to be composed of 2 "sub-devices", with either one or other disconnecting at each time :
    • One USB controller
    • One Audio controller

(remove space before com)

The usage I would like to make of this is using the midi keyboard for a software on the host while the VM is running in background ; I don't care if the guest is capturing the USB controller or not, as long as I can use it on host (Windows 10 20H2)

Any help to find the cause and solution of this problem would be much appreciated.
