USB device < USB HD Western Digital > is busy with a previous request

Post by Totem »

Hi guys,
I know there are several topics on this issue but I already tried all suggested procedures without any success.
My Host PC has Windows7 and the Guest is Windows10 x86. It worked until suddendly the external USB HD WD, but also USB sticks, don't work anymore on the Guest.
I also tried with an old Guest Image, which was working, but nothing. I also tried with a different guest Image with Windows7 and also in this case, it doesn't work anymore.
I already set filters, unistalled/reinstalled VirtualBox, GuestAdditions, cleaned Registers on Guest as well Host but nothing.
What happens?
The USB HD or Memory stick is connected and recognized on the Windows Host. When Guest is booting I hear the classic Windows Sound of a device Connection and the USB devices disappear from the Host and I see them under Guest USB Devices. When I try to enable them, I get the error message that the device is already busy with a previous request and they remain visible under USB Devices even if they have been disconnected.
I don't remember if on the Host - Control Panel - Devices - USB - I have to see a VirtualBox USB device. Actually I dont see any but I don't know if it is important.
Since I have the same behaviour on different Images, I guess the issue is on the Host but where?
I really hope on your help

Thank you

Reading the threads, I think I have to install the VirtualBox USB Drivers becasue I don't see any USB Device in my Windows Host Control Panel.
I installed the Guest Additions and re-installed VirtualBox. How can I install the VirtualBox USB Drivers for Windows7 ?

Wait a minute, I have to get this straight... Do you have a problem seeing the USB devices on the host, yes or no? Forget the VirtualBox part for a moment. Do you see the USB devices when VirtualBox is not even running?

No, on the host everything perfectly works. When VirtualBox starts, the device disappears on the host because it is captured by the guest but on the guest I only can see it in the list of the available devices. When I click on it, I get the error message and the device is not visible in Windows Explorer.
I checked again and, when VB starts, I can see it in the list of USB Devices of the host control panel (I thought it had to be always visible).

I'm going to repeat it, because I have the feeling that you ignored it the fist time:

Thank you for the info, yes, that's what I was looking for (almost). Here's the most important information that I wanted to see. I've tried to color-code what should match (which it does). Hope it doesn't look like a circus... ;)

And now for the VBox.log...

It seems that you have selected the wrong template for your guest! Not the Win10 that you're supposed to have. Was this an upgrade, or you simply didn't pay the necessary attention when you were setting up the VM?

But most importantly, I do not see the Western Digital HD being plugged (and obviously unplugged), while the VM is running. Did you follow the instructions to have the HD plugged after the VM has started and you've logged in? The only USB related information is the following, which deals with the "USB mouse" of the VM:
00:00:03.688013 VUSB: Attached 'HidMouse' to port 1 on RootHub#1 (FullSpeed)
Finally, one very important question: do you need access to the USB device itself (to format it for example), or you simply want access to the HD's contents? Because if it's the latter, you'd be much easier and overall better off if you simply shared the USB HD as a shared folder...

Thank you for your prompt reply and I did some further tests.
When the error on the guest occours, the usb devices are frozen in the list box even if they have been unplugged. The only way to cancel them from the list, is to install VB or Extension Pack again.
I did it and I started again with a clean VB
The attached pictures show the steps and the log is the new one.
When I insert an USB device, I hear the classic Windows sound but in the log there isn't any registration.
From the line: 00:03:49.321549 GUI: Show mini-toolbar for window #0 unitl 00:11:22.791882 GUI: Resize mini-toolbar for window #0 to 1920x1080, I inserted USB HD, USB Stick (already inserted in the past) and a brand new USB Stick (not inserted before). When I inserted the new USB Stick, it has been recognized as new device and the drivers had been installed but also in this case there isn't any Registration in the log file.
It is now clear that the USB devices are not recognized and it is an issue by the USB port/Drivers but I can tell you that all USB devices were perfectly working until a couple of weeks ago...

This is an update on my last tests.
I created a VMDK Image and I opened it with VBox and also VMWare. With Vbox the issue is the same, with VMWare it perfectly works.
I unistalled VBox also removing all Registers and hidden Directory as well the Driver under Windows/system32/Drivers and I installed again VBox from schratch: same issue.
I don't have any other idea...
