choosing arch linux when downloading VM

Post by nobhobbor »

i have read though the linux distros on the VM download page a few times and i am not seeing arch linux listed. i am planning to test manjaro linux based on arch linux and qubes (not sure of the spelling) on my late 2013 iMac 64 bit with a 3 TB internal HD with 1.61 TB available running MacOSX 10.9.5 is qubes based on debian linux?
i am more focused on the manjaro test at the moment
i am thinking of migrating to arch linux to continue music production and learn mixbus and tracktion (not sure of the spelling) DAWs

hum .. now it seems all that is being asked is host info. the page i was looking at before wanted to know what linux distro i was going to run. was that page for something else, not for downloading VM?

You sound like a fairly new user to VirtualBox. Since you are expected to know some basic terms before we engage in a meaningful discussion, I would suggest to start by reading three small chapters from the User Manual: Or even better, read the whole chapter 1. First steps.

Where are you reading that exactly?

Who's asking you for your host info?

Page? Web page? What is "the page"?

hi thanks for the reply
"who is asking ?" etc
that is a good question which i do not know the answer to, i searched for: virtual machine . org and was directed to this [virtual box dot org] oracle site [i think, but who knows] which i thought was asking me to choose which linux distro i wanted to run in my VM from a list that didn't include arch linux. i didn't think to double check what site i was actually on, so i suppose it could have been in a phishing site. at any rate, i am not a computer expert. i just thought i'd click a few things and have my VM up and running, so whether i was mistaken on that account or not or not, i am here to learn, which means i will the read the list that you supplied and incase i do not return here to this forum for a little while i wanted to thank you for helping me with the first step on my way to either trying linux or becoming an linux based music production enthusiast, i appreciate it ;-)
thank you

if i hit "back" enough times, in enough tabs i might find it. that is what i did
this is who gave me a list of distros to choose from which do not include arch linux:
virtual box . org / wiki / Linux _ Downloads (You must be a member for 1 days and have 1 posts before you can post urls.)
if i am reading the distros list and the different versions (i am assuming) of virtual box to choose from, it looks like there is only one or two virtual boxes (or whatever i386 or AMD64 are) to use anyhow; i386 or AMD64, but there is no arch linux. i am just saying how it appears to me, as a newbie, but what is more likely is that i have no idea what i am looking at, therefor i will read. i just posted this to answer your question of "who?" and "what page?" and i will reread your post a few more times to see if there is anything else besides posting this and reading the links you supplied that i need to do
thanks!

I see what you were trying to do... Let me try to explain it, in as plain terms as I can. The initial links from chapter 1 do a much better job, I'll try to "summarize" them.
  • Host is your actual computer. You posted on the "OSX Hosts" area, so I assume you have a Mac. You need "VirtualBox for OSX hosts" from the Downloads area.
  • After you've installed it you need a "Guest", the "fake computer" that runs inside your computer. What "fake computer" you choose depends on you. You seem to want Arch. You should go to an Arch distribution site (like Manjaro for example) and download the installation ISO. For example, from their Downloads page you could choose the Manjaro XFCE, the first one.
  • After that, read the chapters that I linked to. A couple of times if needed, until you understand them fully.
