Windows 10 Cannot Install to RawDisk

Post by emansg »

I am trying to install windows 10 to a rawdisk vhdk file bound to a SanDisk 128GB flash drive. Each time I try to install to the rawdisk I get and error message while Windows is copying files to the drive. Specifically this is error code 0x80070570. It claims that there is a missing or corrupt file and requests that I replace the file. I have heard of Windows ISOs becoming corrupt but I do not believe this is the problem because using the same ISO file I was able to install to both a regular vhdk file and a vhdk bound to a dmg file on my desktop. So basically the Windows 10 installer can install fine to anything but my USB drive. I have also attempted using the Windows 7 installer to install to my USB but got a blue screen during the copying files process. Can someone please tell me if there is something I am missing. I have tried to provide all of the data I have but if I am missing something please tell me.

Try WinToUSB. That works for sure, I've done it myself...
Through an already existing Win VM, because I'm on OSX, and it's a Windows-only program.

Okay I'll try using that. I've heard about it and tried using it without success on my Windows 7 desktop. I'll try using it through a VM on my laptop (Macbook Air) though. Still is there any explanation why I can't get VirtualBox to install to my USB3.0 rawdisk?

Attempted to use WinToUSB. As far as I can tell it's just doing nothing.

Not sure what you're doing, and it's been a long time since I did mine, I don't even remember what I did. But I do remember that it was a fairly straightforward procedure, if someone were to follow the instructions...

I've used WintoUSB this for a long time, on my last 2 laptops and only once did it fail to work, Shortly after the failure there was an update and it started to work again. I use it about every quarter to to put my OS on a WD Passport drive - just to have a quick alternative should my SSD decide to go out. Frankly, I've never had to actually use it but I've tested it out every time after rebuilding it.

Performance from USB is dismal, but it worked.

Would you mind repeating that to the folks that put their VMs in a USB stick and then complain about "bad performance"? ;)
