[Solved] USB Drivers Not Showing Up

Post by LC »

I successfully installed my USB drivers (received confirmation), but they do not show up as an option under Devices in the menu.

Any ideas?

I'm afraid I asked for way more information than just the log...

The only item on the list not included was the terminal run info. But it is specified for Windows or Linux only—I'm on a Mac.

No it's not. Read it again. There is one extra command that applies if you are on Windows, and one extra command that applies if you're on Linux. The rest apply to all...

You've made several mistakes, none of them fatal. But you seriously need to devote 15' of your time to read the FAQ. All of the answers are there, I don't really like repeating information that I've already written down...

I'm going to list the mistakes, you do the reading, OK?
  • I want to see the "VBoxManage list usbhost" output, while the USB device in question is actually plugged it. Read #8: Asking for help.
  • You figured out that the VM name doesn't actually include the "<" or ">". Good... ;)
  • You applied a blank filter. Not the best idea on the planet. Read #4: USB Filters.
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Delete all values except Name, VendorID and ProductID. The Name is nothing more than a label and is not actively participating in the filtering process. You can change it at will. I usually use "Stick: XYZ" or "Joystick: ABC" or "Other: IJK".
Not able to fill in the settings because my ATMEL driver is not showing up, i.e., I have no idea what the Name, VendorID and ProductID are.

Well, that tells me that your ATMEL device isn't even showing up on your Mac!!! Do you see the device if you go to the Apple menu () » About this Mac » System Report... » USB ? Does it show there?

Is it a USB1/2/3 device? How do you plug it in? One thing is for sure; if you can't see it, you can't possibly use it. Kinda makes sense, no?

It won't show because there are no macOS drivers. That is why I am having to go through VirtualBox.

If you saw that clip of the video link I sent over, they were able to select in from the Devices/USB menu. It doesn't show up there.

Ideas?

LC wrote:It won't show because there are no macOS drivers.
That has absolutely nothing to do with the device showing in the USB bus. It only means that you can't use the device on OSX, that's it.
LC wrote:That is why I am having to go through VirtualBox.
If your Mac doesn't see the USB device, there's no chance in this world that VirtualBox will see it. None.
LC wrote:they were able to select in from the Devices/USB menu. It doesn't show up there.
Because your Mac doesn't see the device, VirtualBox won't see the device. Can't see what's not there...
LC wrote:Ideas?
Yeah... A broken device? A broken hub? A bad cable? Can you try with another device? A USB stick for example, an external HD, a camera, sound card, gamepad, joystick, anything? Remember to go to the System Report. Refresh the report if you have to (Cmd+R).

And why is this thread on "Windows Hosts"? You have a "Windows Guest" and an "OSX Host", but since the problem seems to be with the host, I'm moving this to the "OSX Hosts" area.

Finally, please post the output of the following command from the Terminal:
  •
    kextstat | grep -v com.apple

Hi Socratis. Working!

Having you isolate down the problem to the USB connection in the host device allowed me to figure out a solution. It appears that the device timed out, so by reconnecting and quickly setting up the protocols, I was able to both connect the device in VirtualBox and update the firmware.

MANY THANKS for your help on this one!
