Can not run school software - video card problem

Hi, I Installed Windows 7 in Virtualbox - my main OS is Linux Mint 18.3.
I need to run a school software that has these minumum requiements:
- Windows Xp / 7
- 512 MB RAM
- 1.5 Ghz DualCore Processor
- Ati Radeon x1300+/Geforce 7 series +
- 256 MB video card
- 1 GB free space
- 1024x768

My specs are:
- 4096 RAM assigned to this virtual machine (8 GB RAM total)
- i5 processor
- my video card is Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Bonaire XTX [Radeon R7 260X/360]
- 256 MB assigned to video card from Virtualbox settings (also 3D enabled, 2D enabled)

The software has installed succesfully. I have installed Guest Additions and Extension Pack.

When I start the software I receive an error that says

"Failed to initialize Direct3D.
Make sure you have at least DirectX 9.0c installed, have drivers for your graphics card and have not disabled 3D acceleration in display settings.

and on the software's website says that this error is related to the video card (not being in the minimum requirements). In Device Manager, video card is displayed as Virtualbox Graphic Adapter.

What should be done?

There isn't a great deal can be done. The graphics card that VirtualBox box provides is an emulated one and it doesn't have the same level of performance as the graphics cards they suggest.

You didn't mention what the application was but from the information that you have given it looks as though it is very 3D graphics intensive which isn't an area virtualisation plays well.

Thanks for the reply, andyp73. The software I want to use is an interactive CD for primary school, with games and animations.

Make sure you enable 3D acceleration in the VM settings, and (if XP) install the GAs in safe mode, per the instuctions in section 4.5 of the user manual.
