I am unable to install Virtualbox 5.2 I have tried several distributions on Linux Mint 18.3 and get the same error about this Virtualbox breaking the existing Virtualbox despite having removed it from the system. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I'm not sure what you mean "several distributions". There's only one and only one you should be trying; 5.2.18 for Ubuntu 16 (which is what Mint 18.3 is based upon).

That means one thing and one thing only; that you have not completely removed the old VirtualBox installation. See the "apt-get purge" help on how to do this.

PS. I changed your thread's title. "installation" is not actually a title that's going to attract attention or help with people searching in the future. Please chose an appropriate title next time please.
