I'm new to virtual machines but not sure if the performance is supposed to be like this or what

So I am running VB with windows 8.1 guest (mainly because I need powerpoint) on Lubuntu 18.04 host with the following spec:

Thinkpad E460
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6200U CPU @ 2.30GHz
8GB ram

But I find the switching between host and guest is jerky? Sometimes running software in host or guest, is slow? Is this normal for running VB with a good-ish system like mine?

I made this but I have yet to have help: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=89420
[ModEdit; and it was deleted, because duplicates are not allowed. Forum rules.]

Just wondering if adding more memory really would help in upping the performance as I can't afford to buy more if I can help it.

We're going to need to see a VM log from a complete VM run:
  • Start the VM from cold-boot (not from a paused or saved state) / Observe error / Shutdown the VM (force close it if you have to).
  • With the VM completely shut down (not paused or saved), right-click on the VM in the VirtualBox Manager and select "Show Log".
  • Save only the first "VBox.log", ZIP it and attach it to your response. See the "Upload attachment" tab below the reply form.
PS1: Please attach images locally next time. If they are needed, because you could have simply pasted the text.
PS2: Please don't say "I'm new to virtual machines" in the title of every one of your topics. In 10 years you won't be anymore... ;)
