VM caused reboot of Macbook and corrupted vhd

I was working in the VM with Windows 10 and it caused a reboot of my computer. Now I can't access the machine because the vhd is corrupted with a differencing error. Based on what I've read, it's due to reaching the size limit of the vhd. What I can't figure out is how to fix the corruption and resize the disk so I can continue using the VM . Is there a way to do that?

Do you mean crash and reboot?

What's the exact error?

Why did you create a VHD? That's not the default for VirtualBox. And what makes you think that you've reached the size limit? What was the original size?

Answer the above questions and we'll see if it's possible or not.

The computer crashed and rebooted. I then got the error below when trying to reopen the VM
Could not open the medium '/Users/heidigannon/VirtualBox VMs/Windows 10/Snapshots/{0d1e010a-cbdc-46f0-9699-f09ea7bcf0ca}.vhd'.

In Finder window is it shows my disk size as 53.69GB. I don't remember why I picked the VHD setup. Beginner error.
