Shared Folders in Open Source Edition of VirtualBox 1.6.2

I have installed VBox on Debian Etch from the package sources, and the installation of various os works fine. But I cannot use shared folders. I do have installed the guest additions and I have created a shared folder for the virtual windows xp, but when I want to access the folder it is not listed within the "Netzwerkumgebung" (I use a german Version of Windwos XP Pro, SP 2 in the virtual machine).

BTW the shared folder residues on an NTFS partition (writing access by ntfs3g). Might this be the reason of the problem?

Is there a chance to use shared folders in the open source version of VBox?

In your "Network Places"*, there should be an entry titled "Entire Network"*. Look in there and you will see a new network type. In there you will find the Shared Folder. You could have used the command/address that is described in both the manual and Forum FAQ to connect to the SF.

*This is the name in the English version of Windows. This is obviously different on a German version, but a translation should help you ;).

Nothing to do with the problem.

The problem is that I have installed the OSE of VBox. At http://virtualbox.org/wiki/Sharing_files_on_OSE I have read that it is not possible to access shared folders with this version of VB unless one uses samba or nfs.

So I will install a samba server to use shared folders.

Shared Folders is a function that is in the OSE version. Strange that it's noted like that. It's not on the Editions page as a specific function for the PUEL version. You can install the PUEL version without any problems, though. The VMs are exchangable. Keep in mind that you must remove everything from the OSE version in your package manager before installing the PUEL version.

Yes, it's strange: "With the OSE version of VirtualBox you will not be able to use the Shared Folder facility offered by the version delivered as binary."

Inconsistent information politics.
