[Solved] Can't install Win XP Pro to VM

Hi, No problem creating a VM on my Win 10 but can't install WIN XP Pro from CD. Tried to upload screen print but keeps not allowing. Basically says Failed/Error "You have Auto Capture Keyboard turned on, This will cause the Virtual Machine to Automatically capture". Don't know what to do next? Hoping its something simple, I would guess I need to turn it off but can't find where. I had a VM with XP Pro on this computer a couple years ago but a major disaster with win 10 Anniversary update formatted my whole computer and lost everything on it. It worked with XP previously but did keep having hiccups making it unreliable so got out an old computer with XP on and used that. Only need it for my accounts system that won't work beyond XP. Managed to paste below.
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine XP Pro.

Raw-mode is unavailable courtesy of Hyper-V. (VERR_SUPDRV_NO_RAW_MODE_HYPER_V_ROOT).

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: ConsoleWrap
Interface: IConsole {872da645-4a9b-1727-bee2-5585105b9eed}

Help, thanking you in advance, Dennis

That's not an error, that's a notification. You can click on the X and have it never bother you again.

After making 110% sure that Hyper-V is disabled in the Windows Features, you might want to make sure that Fast Boot is disabled and do a cold boot (i.e. shut down the host for a minute or two). You also must make sure that nothing else is using Hyper-V, things like antivirus, debuggers, emulators, etc. Check out the articles "Diagnosing VirtualBox Hardening Issues" and "I have a 64bit host, but can't install 64bit guests" to get some ideas...

Here's a rather big laundry list of things to try: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/17741#comment:9

And read the Microsoft article on Credential Guard: Manage Windows Defender Credential Guard

Hi Thanks for help. The Windows Hyper V and Powershell were both enabled, don't know why? Disabled and loaded XP Pro no problem.

Firstly I accept that I am a computer idiot and apologise in advance. I can't load any programs on, it recognises the the drive CD/DVD player on USB but does not show cd thats in it. Same with printer, shows found new hardware but wizard won't open software in drive. I only need this for my accounts system MYOB that won't go beyond XP and basically only need to print and backup. When I tried it a few years ago on I think 8.1 I got it all working but erratic so pulled out old computer, sure I found somewhere about installing printers etc but can't find it now.

Another question can I add it to my Macfee security thingy not that I need to use the internet except for updates and drivers etc. Really appreciate any help. I have 1000's of customers from my web site [Mod edit; URL removed] and always help them even those that purchase elsewhere. So called experts tell my web site is crap but oddly enough my customers like it and find it easy to use!! Thank you Socratese for your help. Dennis

You should go in the VM Settings » Storage » 1) select the CD icon on the right, 2) click on the CD icon on the right, 3) select "Host Drive ...". You should see the CD in your WinXP VM.

Is your printer a networked printer? Does XP have drivers for that printer?

Hi Socratis, Apologies for late reply, been really busy. Thanks for help have got it running and seems ok.

Just a couple of queries as I like to try!! and understand things. I followed your instructions for cd/dvd player and instead stating "Host" it showed the name of the original XP installation software even though it wasn't in the drive, in my thicko mode I clicked on that in case that was intended but whole computer froze solid and had to turn it off to start again. The VM had of course saved that "state" but managed to clear it and get back to where I was. Underneath the CD option was a box to tick for live cd/dvd drive which I did and it then worked so I could load on my accounts software.

I notice now though that when I click save it wants to save to that drive which I have a USB stick in now, should it save to the virtual hard drive, if so how do I achieve that? It's not a problem saving it to the stick though as I would back it up also anyway and hopefully back that file up from usb to my cloud one drive, haven't tried that yet. Do I need to do a back up disc for the whole Virtual set up in case of future problems.

Had a lot of trouble getting the printer to work and in the end did with a usb connection, software did not want to do a wireless one for some reason but not a problem as printer is next to this computer. Managed to put my Mcafee antivirus etc. on without problems.

I think that's about it, sorry to be a bit long winded, getting close to 70 years old now and brain not so good!!! XP didn't have the drivers for the printer it's on wireless for laptops and other computers around the place.

Regards Dennis

I don't have a clue what that statement might refer to. If you want to continue the discussion, read the last sentence of my message.

Did you try wired? Wireless doesn't always work. It depends on your host's WiFi card and your WiFi router. Some combinations of Routers/Access Points, WiFi cards and drivers work, some don't. See: Bridging & Wifi - Supported hardware and add your experience. If you want to continue the discussion, read the last sentence of my message.

Glad you got it going. Marking as [Solved]. If you have any more questions, please open a new thread. Something that matches the thread's title with the actual content. One issue per thread, one thread per issue... ;)
