USB device driver not found

After installing 5.2.16 my usb to serial device cannot be used. it worked in 5.2.8. using what I believe is the same set of parameters. I have installed the extension pack ,and the guest additions files.
Host is windows 10 enterprise 64 bit, version 1709 build 16299.492 guest is windows 7 professional 32 bit
I followed the instructions I found in the forum and get the following results. when I start the virtual box, and go to the device manager screen the usb-serial device is identified as having an issue. The usb to serial device drivers are current per the manufacturer and support both 32 bit and 64 bit systems. and were installed in the guest system. When I scan the system for changes the device driver tries to load and produces the attached error.
I did a search of the guest system I find that the drivers seem to be in the windows32 drivers folder. then I copied the drivers to a folder on the desktop of the guest system and tried to load from there with the same error message
where is the VBox expecting to find the drivers?
What files do you need from my config to help trouble shoot this issue?
Thanks

You have set your guest to use xHCI (which gives USB3 and USB2 support). It isn't clear from your image whether Windows 7 hasn't found the USB host controller or whether it is having problems just with the USB device you have plugged in.
Can you confirm that you have installed Intel xHCI drivers as detailed in post #6 in
FAQ: USB basics and troubleshooting to the guest.
Also, a screen capture of device manager in the guest sorted by connection and with the USB controllers expanded might be clearer.

usb 3.0 extensible controller now is installed and the usb serial adapter cannot be attached

I wonder if the USB serial adapter being a very slow device won't work with xHCI. Can you try changing the configuration of the guest to USB 2.0 (EHCI). That should prompt Windows 7 to detect both EHCI and OHCI host controllers and hopefully then the USB serial adapter.
If that doesn't work then we will need to see the VBox.log file from the guest. Zip it up and post it here.
-Andy.

What do you mean with "cannot be attached"?
What is the exact error message?

Please read the following:
USB basics and troubleshooting,
#8: Asking for help. Post the information requested. Actually it would be great if you read the whole thing from the beginning.
There doesn't seem to be a USB insertion/ejection after you've started the VM, so please follow the instructions carefully.

- Please don't put simple text on a DOCX document. Simple TXT (Notepad) will do. Not everyone has Office installed...
- You have two filters for the same device. Remove one of them.
- Your filters are "overpopulated", too many values.
- Once again, I did not see the USB device being plugged in AFTER the VM started as per the instructions.
- You were told twice to read the USB basics and troubleshooting series of posts. I'm going to repeat it a third and final time, after that you're on your own. When advice is given, it is expected that the advice will be followed.

looks like the virtual box usb device driver for the host machine did not install.
I tried to reinstall using the run as administrator which also seems to have failed.
I did a clean install on my home desktop, (a windows 10 professional system version 1803, build 17134.191) and the driver was installed.
The problem host is a HP Probook 650 G2 laptop running windows 10 enterprise 64 bit, version 1709 build 16299.492
Can the driver be manually installed?

it looks like it did install.
- Unplug the USB device
- Plug in the USB device

You're not trying to install the USB3 Intel drivers on your host, are you? This is supposed to be installed on the Win7 guest, not on the Win10 host.

The intel driver has been and was installed when one of the moderators mentioned the need for it on the guest machine, the laptop host is where the driver failed.
I thought that if it was needed on my desktop at home, maybe it was necessary here as well.
My desktop at home is an older machine and appeared to need the intel extensible driver before it would fully integrate with the VBox ...

Of course! The driver is meant to be installed on the guest, *not* on the host. Read the suggestion again.
jcricket wrote:I thought that if it was needed on my desktop at home, maybe it was necessary here as well.
It was not necessary at home or wherever "here" might be. I repeat; it's meant for your Win7 guest.
