Hello,

I created my first VM and have loaded XP Pro SP2 on it. I have gotten everything I need working, including shared folders, but cannot get explorer to connect to the internet. I have IE8 installed. I get the message it cannot connect, even though the network adapter shows "connected". I have spent a day searching the web and trying various things, mostly to no avail. I suspect it is a problem with IE8, because I found a post that said IE will not work in XP in a VM and it suggested using a browser called PaleMoon. I found the proper site and had go go back to version 9 (it is currently on version 27) to find one that worked.

So now I can access the internet in the VM using this old version of PaleMoon. Can anyone suggest what I can do to get IE8 to work also?

If you can "ping <DefaultGateway>", if you can "ping 1.1.1.1", if you can "ping download.virtualbox.org", VirtualBox is working as it should. You should look elsewhere for your networking connectivity. Look in your host for firewalls, proxies, antivirus filters, web-cleaning applications, redirectors, etc.

For WinXP specifically, the security certificates have expired about 10 years ago, so you won't have too much luck connecting to pretty much anything with IE8.

I have Firefox 52.9.0 ESR (2018-06-26) and it's working great. I couldn't find a link on the Firefox site, so here's a link directly to their download servers: https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/52.9.0esr/ The support for WInXP and Vista will end on Aug/2018.

Oh, BTW, I think that most of them will require Service Pack 3. Microsoft has pulled all their downloads and links. You'll have to find the SP3 from another source...

Edit: Here's the page from Mozila: Firefox ESR. You'll have to download version 52 and upgrade from within Firefox. I'd go with the previous option, more direct

Thanks socratis. I can ping those sites from a command prompt in the vm, so it is not VB. I did find a copy of Firefox Mozilla 52.9.0 ESR and it works fine also. The old version of PaleMoon also works. It is a mystery why IE8 won't work, but I hardly use IE ever anyway. As long as I can get to the web using another browser, I am happy.
