In that case back up the VM then delete the snapshot before you start.

Yes, the container style makes no difference to the VM, it only affects what operations are supported by host tools - basically VMDK only supports a subset of what a VDI supports.

I am not quite sure which file in the Windows XP VM folder that should be processed by CloneVDI. I attach 2 screenshots of the folder, where all the possible files and maps can be seen. I guess that I should process Windows XP-disk001 (after having deleted the snapshot) with CloneVDI but on the other hand, that file is dated as far back in time as 2018-04-30. Please clarify what file should be used.

If you back up the VM before deleting the snapshots then there should be no need for such concern. Then yes, you would select the -disk001.vmdk file in the VM folder.

Btw, is there a similarly simple way to do this process the other way around, i e if the ambition is to decrease the VM disk size. Again windows 10 Home host and Windows XP pro guest. (I am asking for a friend of mine.)

No, not really, you might lose data. What you could do is a little more convoluted (actually a lot), but it shouldn't be discussed here; it doesn't match the thread's title
"Increasing the disk size of a VM", it's misleading. Open a new thread if you want to discuss this. I would suggest
"Decreasing the disk size of a VM" as a meaningful title...
