Do I really need virtualbox-guest-utils ?

I looked at installing it again but it wants to remove a bunch of stuff.

Ok, you posted in "Linux Hosts". Does your question therefore refer to your host, which is some variety of Linux? Why would you install Guest Additions on your host?
