Gutsy Gibbon: no USB?

Postby Koppie » 16. Jul 2007, 03:09

I'm running Windows XP guest on Kubuntu Gutsy host and I can't get USB to work.

I have set USB permissions correctly and my user (me) is part of the vboxusers group. I have restarted the session.

I am using the non-free version, not the OSE. I tried installing both from the innotek repo, and downloading the .deb and installing it that way.

I think the problem is the new kernel (currently 2.6.22-8-generic). VB has to custom compile a kernel. It says it's successful, but when I check /var/log/vbox-install.log:
cp: missing destination file operand after `/tmp/vbox.0/Module.symvers'
Try `cp --help' for more information.
make KBUILD_VERBOSE=1 -C /lib/modules/2.6.22-8-generic/build SUBDIRS=/tmp/vbox.0 SRCROOT=/tmp/vbox.0 modules

I can run VB, and I managed to install Windows and run programs just fine. The only thing that doesn't work is USB. When I go into settings, the USB tab doesn't show up, and I get this error:
Could not load the Host USB Proxy Service (VERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND).The service might be not installed on the host computer.

Anybody know how I can fix this? Thanks in advance!

Looks like someone else has the same problem: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=905

It's interesting to note that the other person is running the 2.6.18 kernel, not 2.6.22, and they're running Debian instead of Kubuntu. Which tells me that my problem isn't unique to my kernel or my distro.

Edit: Once I realized the problem wasn't unique to Gutsy, I was able to find the solution:

http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. ... hlight=usb
http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. ... hlight=usb

Basically, edit /etc/fstab and add the following:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=46,devmode=664 0 0

Then remount:
Code: Select all   Expand viewCollapse view
mount -a

Worked for me! If it doesn't work for you, there's another thing to try: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. ... hlight=usb

Edit 2: I should add that this was the only thing keeping me from switching to VirtualBox. I've been using VMWare for several months now. I did some reasearch about which VM was the best and it seems that the general consensus is VMWare: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthre ... post967967 So I installed VMWare, it was a pain to set up but I got the hang of it. One problem is every time you update your kernel, you have to run a long, text-only wizard to recompile your kernel module. The bigger problem is their fancy, corporate development seriously lags. It took them several months to support Feisty, and now they don't support Gutsy. I posted on their forum warning them that if they didn't support the new OS, they'd lose me as a customer. I didn't even get a reply (except for another user who had the same problem).

Then I try VB . . . fast, easy, much smaller installation. There's a working repository. Kernel module compiled quickly and easily. USB support was the only problem but I discovered the fix is already there (and took me two minutes to implement).

Once again, open source beats proprietary. Nice work guys, you've got another loyal user!
