[Invalid] Black Screen Showing (#17766)

Post by anupam_123 »

[ModEdit; related ticket: #17766: Black screen showing]
Good Morning guys! My problem is very unique. My VM was working just fine with no issues, but yesterday I removed my VM by clicking on remove. but instead of clicking remove only, i clicked delete all files! My VHD got deleted permanently! So, with muchh patience, I downloaded it again(7.39 GB)..but this time, something strange happened. WHen I started it, a screen started and I can give you one word that was showing a lot and it is "removing orphan file"...something like that...and it took approx 1/2 hour and when it was done, i tried to start the VM and now there was an error...and the error was.."lsass.exe system error: Security Accounts Manager initialization failed because Directory Service cannot start".

Than I tried formatting my C drive. Installed everything again and now the error is gone, but got new strange issue! BLACK screen....nothing happens!

Please help me guys... I lost my sleep over this..

My Host OS is WIndows 7 and Guest OS is Windows Server 2003.

Thank you
(my ticket number is #17766 and I came from bug tracker..)

That sounds like a corruption in the file system that the Windows guest is trying its hardest to recover from. Likewise, the issue with lsass.exe would suggest that the file has been removed or become invalid for the same reason. Did you check the md5sum or SHA1 checksum of the file you downloaded to make sure it was valid before you tried using it? I think you may have to download it again and verify its integrity.

Was this something that you did for your host? If so, that seems a bit extreme as a way to fix an issue with a guest. It is akin to buying a new car as a way to repair a puncture in your bicycle tyre.

If you can clarify the situation a bit more that would be good, and we may need to see the VBox.log file from the guest in question to see if it contains any clues as to the black screen. Boot the guest, make sure the problem occurs then shut the guest down (by force if necessary). zip the log file and post it.

It would be good to know that you started from something valid before we go chasing wild gooses.

If this is correct then I am wondering why the guest is configured to use the "Windows NT" template. You might want to consider creating a new VM using the correct Windows 2003 template and use the existing .vdi file you have.

This might be a bit low for Windows 2003. Given your host RAM limitation I would push it up to about 1.5GB (1536MB) but no more.

Your Intel i3-4005U only has 2 cores so you need to make sure you only allocate one to the guest.

I'm guessing this is a disk that has been imported from somewhere as .vdi disks images are much more preferable than .vhd. Also, what type of physical disk is drive E: and how is it attached to the host - SATA, USB, etc?

Also, the VBox.log file seems to show that you have installed VirtualBox into the same directory as the disk image (or installed VirtualBox to E:\sap and then copied the disk image there which isn't the usual way of doing things.

I would suggest this is fairly conclusive proof, along with the other evidence, that this VHD file is dead! I would suggest that you need to download it again and try the process again with a new VM.

I'm not sure where you are downloading this from (and I'm not sure I want to know) but is this a legitimate source given that both Windows 2003 and SAP are copyright and licensed code. We can't be seen to promoting or assisting in deliberate violations of software license agreements.

I'm not quite sure where that came from, it's not very clear from your description. Did that come from the host, or the guest?

Thank you Socratis for your reply.
Yes you asked the main question....every problem started when i opened virtual box, clicked on the VM and clicked start...a screen appeared, and i don't remember the address but this word was repeating a lot....removing orphaned file....i think it happened with the guest OS...my guest OS is WIndows Server 2003..it carried on for around 30 minutes...and i knew something wrong has happened...and when i tried to start it again, it showed the lsse.exe error.

I guess it happened because I changed the location of my vhd.....that's why this "removing orphaned files" message, may be.....

But the surprising this is that I formatted my C drive, downloaded the vhd again and now this error is gone. But Blank Screen appears this time....

I am downloading the vhd again as suggested by Andy. Please let me know the exact steps to follow this time....like where to put the vhd, thanks
