I am currently running also one Ubuntu 16.04 server OS in VirtualBox on Ubuntu Linux host running out of diskspace. I was wondering for best practice how to resize exising 30 GB vhd to 120 GB for example or to a dynamic size drive as well that guest OS checks this change.

There's a FAQ that addresses this very question: "
How to resize a Virtual Drive".

Incidentally, "best practice" would dictate discarding the unreliable "vhd" format. Stick to VDI. I've no idea why anyone would voluntarily choose VHD on a Linux host!
