Is virtualbox 1.6 and above supported on Windows 2000 hosts?

Post by ppraveen »

I am currently running Virtualbox 1.5.6 on my Windows 2000 PC running on AMD Sempron. My guest machine is a kubuntu-7.10 machine but recently I am having issues running the guest machine. I am trying to install the recent virtualbox software - 1.6.2 but the installer says it cannot be installed on Windows 2000.

Can virtualbox folks confirm if that is the case?

Thanks,
Praveen.

Ever since 1.6.0 came out, support for Windows 2k was removed. A lot of users complained about this and they are still considering to return the support for that OS. I believe this decision was made by Sun.

I have also seen a workaround posted within the last month. If I recall you tweak one line in the setup file and this removes the OS version check. The install them works fine. The Forum Posting Guide gives some good advice on how to search for this sort of issue.

Thanks for the note Terry, can you please point me to the one-line hack you mentioned? Really appreciate that..

Well either I start looking or you start looking. The only difference in time is that you need to spend an extra couple of minutes to read the section of the document that I pointed at that tells you how. I don't need to do this because I wrote it :) At a guess try:
("Windows 2000" OR Win2000 or Win2K) "1.6.4" supported site:forums.virtualbox.org

I am not sure if 1.6.4 installer runs on Windows 2000, but since there was no announcement I bet it does not. Instructions how to hack installer are available at:

There is also poll concerning windows 2000 host support in 1.6 series.
