Soundcard not working without VGA controller?

Could someone verify whether it's issue on my side or general rule? Audio doesn't seem to work when VM has no VGA controller (no gpu, VBoxManage modifyvm VMNAME --graphicscontroller none)
Soundcard is properly detected in guest and I have access to it. I also checked if for sure that audio output goes to proper card with pavucontrol but still no sound on host.
The same VM with graphics controller set to 'vbox' properly supports sound.
