Unclear how storage is managed

Dear fellow forum Members,

I am not clear as to how the data storage is handled. I have a Win10 system, and wish to install a virtual Ubuntu. What I am not clear about is, should I partition my drive (perhaps install a second) to keep all the Ubuntu data? Will this help in speeding up/increasing performance of Ubuntu?

Thanks

No. You should start by reading the first section of the User Manual: https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/UserManual.html

No partitions required. Virtualbox creates a file the size of the HDD you setup - or in the case you create a dynamic dsik, a smaller size that grows as the data is added.

Virtualbox mounts this file as a hard drive, the OS sees it as such.
