Your systems had absolutely nothing to do with the whole thing. The problem is that you were trying to use a USB3 controller with a Win7 guest, which does not support USB3, it needs extra drivers to be installed. See USB basics and troubleshooting.

Windows 7 will have inbuilt drivers for USB 1.1 (OHCI) and USB 2.0 (EHCI). If you want USB 3.0 (XHCI) then I think you need to install third party drivers into Windows 7. I have never needed the support so I don't know whose drivers are the most reliable but the FAQ: USB basics and troubleshooting seems to recommend ones from Intel.

For USB 2.0 and 3.0 you also need to have the same version of extension pack as VirtualBox version correctly installed.
