I have gone into Devices clicked Shared Folders and added /home/uesername/Downloads under Machine Folders. But when I go to my windows VM and try and map the drive as
\\vboxsvr\Downloads
it says host not found. I am unable to ping vboxsvr
I also am unable to map the drive in dos.
I am using Opensuse 11 and KDE 4 on my host PC
am I missing something? Any help is appreciated

Have you got guest additions properly installed?

Yes, I believe so... The only way I can tell though is because I can move the mouse from screen to screen with out having to hit the right CRTL key

Do I also need to share the folder on the Linux side?

Use explorer and browse your Network Places. Click on 'Entire Network' and see if you have a network type called "VirtualBox Shared Folders". If you don't, try to reinstall the Guest Additions, the Shared Folders weren't installed properly last time. There are also some known issues with 1.6.4 concerning mount problems with SF. You can download GA 1.6.2 from http://www.virtualbox.org/download/1.6.2

I can see the shared printers and faxes etc. when browsing through my network places, I can also ping the box and get replies from with in windows. I am using VirtualBox OSE 1.6.4 so you may be correct with the networking issues you mentioned. (guest additions are also 1.6.4) I am going to install the 1.6.2 guest additions now and try installing the guest additions and see if it helps.

Man.... Thanks! That was plain and simple. I have been doing all sorts of stuff to get this working, Editing the smb.conf (don't worry I have a backup) checking the shares in Yast. Your solution was quite simple and worked. Thank you again

How would you recommend solving this problem on a Vista Ultimate install? Seeing as 'Entire Network', 'My Network Places', and 'VirtualBox Shared Folders' are all absent/nonexistent....

Yes, I have GuestAdditions installed, the shared folder is set up properly, networking is working as I can access the outside world, the Firewall is off(see disabled), I've set the network to 'Public' from 'Private', my Vista machine shows up and is browseable, yet the \\vboxsvr\backup share I've created is inaccessible and no where to be found.

This is not my first go around w/ VirtualBox, as I'm running Windows XP headless VRDP w/ shared folders, without issues on another server ... Vista networking however, is becoming a major annoyance at present.

Any insights?
