Windows 98 won't install

Every time that I try to install Windows 98 on a VM, it appears with this error:
The instruction at 0x76339cc6 referenced memory at 0x000c000c. The memory could not be written.
The only OS's that do this when I try to install them are Windows 98 and Windows ME, any help?

That's probably a crash in an OEM driver. You should install from a standard Win98SE installer (and I wouldn't bother with anything older than SE).

I had a similar problem although the instruction was 0x77839A95. I found I needed to have hardware virtualisation (VT-x) in BIOS switched on. After I dug around and discovered how to do that, Win 98 (SE) installed just fine.
