Failed to find any DirectX 9.c graphics adapters.

When I try to install a game on virtual box it says "Failed to find any DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in this system! Please make sure you have a DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer. The application will now terminate.
I know the game works with this machine as I have played it before on a native windowsXP install, how come it cannot see my graphics card?
