[Solved] Windows 10 Pro on 5K (5120 x 2880) display on iMac

I just converted a Windows 10 Pro VM from VMware Fusion to VirtualBox on 5K iMac but found that the display resolution is only 1600 x 1200. How can I make use of the maximum Retina Display of 5120 x 2880 for the Windows VM?

  1. Did you uninstall any VMWare tools?
  2. Did you install the VirtualBox Guest Additions?
  3. If you did, did you either change the resolution from within the guest, or press HostKey+F to go full-screen?

Hi socratis,

Answering your questions:
1. Before the Windows 10 VM was converted, the VMware Fusion 7 couldn't start the Windows 10 VM on macOS 10.13.3. The Windows 10 VM was migrated from a MacBook Pro to the iMac 5K and hadn't opened for 3 years. And I didn't uninstall any VMware tools.
2. I am totally green on VirtualBox and haven't heard of Guest Additions.
3. I tried changing the resolution from settings and HostKey+F to full-screen, but the VM retain 1600 x 1200. No more.

Do I need to download any display card driver? The Windows 10 said it's already using the best available (Generic PnP).

The guest additions (GA) are installed into the guest OS to give more advanced features including better graphics resolutions. If you read chapter 4 of the user manual it gives more details and instructions on how to install them on Windows.

Just give an update that VirtualBox 5.2.10 and Windows 10 April 2018 update 1803 together has fixed the problem.
